Is importing a melody into BIAB the only way to get one in BIAB. I would like to have the melody then play around with the chords.

raddy,

Either that, create one yourself from scratch, use the Melody Maker feature to create one or change an existing melody by using the melody embellisher feature.

Click on the "Melody" tab at the top of the screen and you'll see the available options.

Forum member, Robert Stanley, created a video explaining use of the Melodist in Band-in-a-Box. The video is available on YouTube +++ HERE +++

All the existing choices use midi. Are you wanting something different?

We wanted to get the melody line down before messing with the chords. I don't think BIAB will do that unless, as you say, we use a midi input to hget the melody line in.

raddy,

In addition to Jim's excellent ideas...

With the Windows version of the software, it's also possible to enter a melody using notation mode, staff roll mode or piano roll mode. It's also possible to play it in using and external instrument that's setup to send midi data.

If you go to the below link, there's a 6:17 minute video called "Entering Notation" which will help you understand how it's done.
