AS a songwriter, this could be an interesting show to watch to pick up a few crumbs here and there on the insights to writing and how the coaches advise the contestants. However, to the majority of the people watching network TV.... I think this will come in somewhere around the level of excitement generated by the tour-de-france, golf or tennis tournaments, or another home remodeling reality show.... not very exciting for the average watcher of TV. I can't see people hanging on the edge of their seats every week, rooting for a writer in the same way, and with the same enthusiasm, as they do a singing star hopeful from the town up the road.

I might be wrong.... we'll have to wait and see.
Thanks for the heads up, sounds interesting!
They sure didn't put much time or effort into building +++ the official "Songland" website +++. The letter "o" sends you to an email registration link. That's it.

The announcement indicates that Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics is one of the executive producers and mentor and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic is another mentor. Another executive producer is The Voice's Audrey Morrissey.

So far, they have a contract for eleven episodes with 5 songwriters competing each episode so that's 55 songwriters that will get big time promotion.

Try moving your mouse over the other letters. There is a lot more than what you saw.

Wow, this is really cool! And looks like the mentors are fairly well known too.
Do you think they would consider pulling all of the next round of contestants from the PG Forum Showcase?

We could yell at each other about the best and worst DAWS, have mud fights and pull one another's hair.

Gene Simmons could referee. It would be epic.

And I could do a revamped version of the Post Bumping Blues
Is the songwriter also the performer?

I read the website but I couldn't figure out the format of the show...

First episode was on last night. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It does appear that the songwriter does sing the song and there's a band on the side that accompanies the songwriter/singer.

They listen to about 5 songwriters and provide feedback to each one. They narrow the field to 3 and each of them works with a judge on improving the song. The main guest singer, John Legend, last night, makes the final decision on the song they want.

Pretty good format and they made it interesting. I wish they focused a little more on the songwriter's development of the musical parts and style. They were more into the lyrics.
The songwriter also gives up all rights to the song for royalties. Lots of chatter about this on the internet for those who want to do the reading.
Wow, that sounds a little counter-intuitive to what the show is trying to do for songwriters.
There was a press release on March 9 which rescinded the clause about songwriters giving up all rights.
As with most reality TV shows, it's more "tv show" than "reality".
I generally loathe reality TV, but this seems pretty intriguing actually. I'd give it an honest shot. It sounds like a breathe of fresh air in comparison to all those singing talent shows.
I watched the episode tonight and it was so cool the song that my husband and I liked the best actually won! I don't know if I'll catch it every week but it was fun watching and hearing how the songs morphed with producers input.
I'm still watching it too Josie. Very interesting show.
