Band-in-a-Box 64 uses the VSTSynthfont 64 app to render midi tracks. The app has been updated to V3.110. - A license must be purchased to use V3.110 for more than 15 days. - Step-by-step instructions are given below to update the app.

Follow the steps below to determine the current version of VSTSynthfont Band-in-a-Box 64 uses to render midi tracks. The version is displayed in the top, right square of the VST. See the top screenshot.
  • Open Band-in-a-Box 64 bit
  • press Ctrl + E
  • the "Audio" button
  • the "Edit Plugin Settings ..." button
  • the "Default Synth" button

Navigate to the download page for VSTSynthfont +++ HERE +++ . VSTSynthfont is the fourth selection from the top. Select the 64 bit installation package for download. See the second screen shot.

Run the VSTSynthfont 64 bit installation file. The installation file asks for a location to download the app to as well as gives a default install location. See the third screen shot.

Change the install location to: x:\bb\Data\libx64 where "x" is the default drive letter for your Band-in-a-Box program.

Follow the steps at the top of this post to verify the plugin version has updated.

Congratulations, you now have the latest update of VSTSynthfont 64!

Wow,

It seems that nobody cares about Synthfont 64. Too bad as it's a nice soft synth.

I've been a Synthfont registered user for about as long as I can remember. When Creative started getting squirrelly about soundfont support on their audio cards, I found Synthfont (both standalone and then later the VST) to fill that gap. Seems I got my first Synthfont back in Windows 98 days.

Hello Jim thanks for all your info. It seems that what you see if true for version 3.2 as per the website but BAIB ships with 3.112. This version is freeware.

I would like help on how to use it. I downloaded some mega soundfont files etc. do you have a link to where I can go to get info on how to use it, load it etc. I am going to the website of VSTSynthfont for help.

I downloaded a 4 GB file at this location that seems to have thousands of sounds but how does this relate to GM?

http://stgigafunware.weebly.com/creations.html

Do you have tips on some high quality Sf2 files that would be a GM soundengine of quality better than TTS-1 or Bandstand?

Bump.

There seems to be renewed interest in Synthfont 64. There are also new users that maybe interested in updating the program.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
