Hello,

On a business trip in Erie, PA, I stayed in a Comfort Inn. Across the street was the Thunderbird Motel -- I said "That's a song!" Now, down the street was the Flamingo Inn -- I haven't written that one yet.

I posted an early version and the most common complaint was that the 2nd half verse really didn't go anywhere new. I kept trying to think of something else, but I couldn't -- so I went the duet route.

I wrote the original on my little classical in the hotel room into the laptop webcam mic, so I decided to keep the classical guitar here, even though I am sort of clunky on it. I thought it deserved the spot!

Kevin

Thunderbird Motel Duet
(c) Emmrich 2011

(Male verses)
sitting in the thunderbird motel
parking lot's half full
and my life’s half empty
sheets didn't get changed today
they don't hand out mints or shampoo bottles
there ain't no plans to re-model

but they'll take your cash with no id
you can stay if you can pay,
it's a good place
to get out of the world's way

(male only chorus)
and i need a place to go when i want out
out of this hole I’m in
i need a place where no one's gonna tell
and i found it here at the thunderbird motel

(Female Verse)
I work down at sam’s silver moon cafe
6am coffee to the working man’s table
breakfast and lunch when I am able
I stand and wait on customers all day
tips on the counter, crumbs on the floor
I’ll stay here ‘til I can’t stand it any more

(female only chorus)
... and I found him here at the Thunderbird Motel

(Bridge)
so don't look for us in no fancy part of town
don't look for us when the sun’s going down
we’ll be were you can’t find us
down at the thunderbird motel

(chorus again -- together)
and we need a place to go when we want out
out of this hole we’re in
we need a place where no one's gonna tell
and we found it here at the thunderbird motel
and we found it here at the thunderbird motel

Kevin,

Sorry to get round to this one a little late.

THis is very well adapted to your vocal style. And Janet does a fine job too

You can't beat a song about a downbeat inn!

In fact the voices complement each other really well.

super guitar playing, especially the end section.

If there are a couple of points you may look to improve:
- I think some of the lyric in the female verse sound a bit clunky - almost like there are too many syllables in the line
- the mp3 may be just a little quiet. I've been listening to 20 or so tracks from different hosting sites on the same system (including from SClick, but I had to turn up the volume for this one.

glad I caught this one in the end...

I added the B3 Organ (#688) to the final chorus of the Thunderbird Motel Duet -- did I go overboard (ha, ha)?

Still need to re-mix a little more. I just got the ATH M-40fs headphones and everything sounds a little "tinny" to me (my older headphones are wrapped up and under the tree -- along with the 2012 BIAB box!!!!). Yea, I know I shouldn't mix with headphones ... but I do. Next year a good set of monitors are on high my wish list.

Hopefully in January I will be mixing a real CD with six songs from the RPM 2011 CD, five songs from this summer's 50/90 exercise and then one older tune. I have been threatening to do this for a long time!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
