Best description I could give of it. Here's the story. I stick in a saved song file of a song which PRIOR to saving it worked perfectly. However, when I go to replay it NOW the song starts SPUTTERING after just a few bars and I can't even stop it with the stop button and have to do a "End Program". I don't get it. Not ALL saved songs do this just SOME. HELP!

Depending on your computer power, it sounds like BIAB is overtaxing the CPU. It would help if you would tell us what you're using.

I've seen this when using RealTracks. Check RT settings and disable 'Speed up generation' and 'High Quality stretching...'. Also, if you're running other applications - that could cause it. Open your Windows Task Manager (Ctrl Alt Del) and see what is using CPU time while this is happening.

Another thing to try is a disk defrag..

Thanks all. Here's the thing. I had originally installed BIAB on my C drive but had saved some songs on my "F" drive and would go back and forth. As said, some songs worked perfectly but a song I am interested in doing NOW didn't. It "Sputtered". I have LOTS more space on my "F" drive so thought I'd try reinstalling BIAB on the "F" drive and, now, that song works. Knock on wood.

Cheers!

Thanks for the update. Is F: an internal drive?

Yes, internal driveS (two). Well, it started doing it again (not as bad) but did decide to exit all my other programs and that worked. My computer is old but quite sufficient for BIAB but, as Rachel seemed to suggest, it can't handle more than one or two things at a time.

I definitely need to do a disc refrag again soon also.

Cheers!

Defragging each of your drives, particularly on an XP machine (which I assume yours is), is a really good suggestion.

Since your PC is on the borderline power-wise, you should look at not only the applications that are running, but also anything in the background. An easy way to check for the presence of offenders is to run the DPC Latency Checker (free tool, find by Google). Also, you can bring up Windows Task Manager and see if anything unusual is eating up CPU cycles.

Also, just for fun, run Geekbench (also find by Google) and report what your score is. We only have a few numbers so far.

I tried running Geekbench on my old XP machine. After one hour, it was still running. I finally gave up. How long should it take to run?

Funny and sad question, Rachael: Obviously, the worse the machine, the longer the test takes. But seriously, it did not take even a minute on my home-built machine (score of 4000). I'll run it now to confirm that.

EDIT: Yep, 29 seconds.

It tells you what subsystem it is testing as it goes. Perhaps you can see which one is hanging up?

Took about a minute to run here for a machine with a 2000+ score.
Those SSD drives Matt uses must make a huge difference..

Bob, you might be right. I love my SSD. I would never go back to a standard hard drive as my boot drive.

Mine does it also when I run on battery alone with the speakers on.
When I plug in the power cord, it usually quits.

TetonJohn, you might be able to fix that. A laptop has default power settings to 'throttle down' the CPU when running on the battery, to conserve power. You can go into the Windows Control Panel power settings and (if you want) tell your laptop to run on full power while on battery. The performance then should be the same, battery or AC.

Here's a little tip I have learned because my computer "sputters" sometimes as well. There is a check box for "Loop" in the toolbars. Uncheck that for all of your songs. Then at least when BIAB reaches the end of your composition it will stop, allowing you to exit normally or do a save of the work you have done. Before I started doing this when my machine would bog down I had no way to exit except to force it to close.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
