Thanks. I will mention though, it's not really meant as a how-to series. I use biab and real band in specific ways as a means to an end specifically for me and how I wish to work. What I do and prefer may not be what someone else should do, given what they wish to accomplish with the software. There's some general things that could be helpful, sure. I'm glad people are picking up some things. But biab and real band are really deep programs, and they can be used to many different extents for many different purposes. I suppose it can be said that the way I use the software doesn't go very deep at all, really relying only on real track generation through a song chart. There's so much more to the software. But if it helps someone a little or spurs on new ideas, that's great. I always find it interesting and lots of fun to watch someone elses process- providing they at least have a certain skill level I'm looking for. In that spirit, this series is being created. Not much more than this- how one guy goes from beginning to end using the software in certain ways. In that spirit, I hope you enjoy looking in on my process!

Nice explanations and I really liked the discussion of prefader volume level setting. That was really cool. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I appreciate you taking the time to offer these videos. Quite a bit can be gleaned from reading and watching other people's approach to producing music with this awesome software.

Loving it Dan! I do lots of edits on my RT's. I totally agree with you that it makes them play your song your way instead of just playing so to speak. Great to see a similiar workflow. I do it in RB and now Tracktion.

Nice tip putting a limiter on the master bus to keep that punch early on. Learning away here.

Thanks again, looking forward to the next one.

Very informative looking forward to the vocal vids

What software was used for screen capture & edit

Suggestion

Increase the mouse cursor. It will make it ease to see mouse movements

Thanks all.

Pghboemike- I'm using movie edit pro 17 for the screen captures. I'm completely new at it, hence why the quality isn't what I'd really like. I am getting better though! And the resolution has to be dumbed down a bit for uploading to youtube because of file size restrictions. If my episodes were shorter, I could get away with HD quality. But I can barely fit what I want to include within 15 minutes! And my files, even at a reduced resolution, are approaching 2 gigs. I think it's watchable enough not be be annoying. I'll check out the mouse cursor thing too.

I was watching PG demos for 2011 last night. Man, I may have to spring for it. I like 2010.5, but 2011 seems so much better in terms of stretching flexibility. We'll see.

The next episode is coming soon. I'm one away from vocals in the studio. That one should be fun!

Great work, Dan -- much appreciated!!! You are making them (almost) faster than I can watch them.

Your method is very similar to mine, although (so far) I have not found it necessary to leave RB (even though I have both Sonar and Reaper)

Looking forward to your vocal methods. I have heard your vocals on other cuts, and you know what you are doing.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Daisy! I crack myself up in this one- saying 'metronone' instead of metronome! LOL! Guess that's the NY'r in me...or maybe just the moron! Haha. Go figure- I usually call it the click track! Thanks for watching!

Hi Dan,

Very good...Metronone indeed

Questions...

When you add the clicks to help your vocal.. How did you do that? is it easy to do? did you have a click track prepared?

Best regards
George

In reaper, you can choose from the menu 'insert click source' and a new track will come up with a click on it for the entire tune. Very handy. What I did in the vid though, is copy the stick count-off from the drum track because I prefer that sound and in this case, it will be all the more musical to sing over during the vocal in those spots. What you saw me doing was pastes of the copy.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for that explanation.

Now there are things I never knew that I will implement in my sessions.

1. In Band In A Box - use spare cells at the end of songs for ad-libs.
2. In Realband - generate lots of solo tracks..the more the merrier.
3. In Realband - get tracks as good as possible..i.e. volume and panning.. remember to listen
4. In Reaper - Cut and paste is your friend.
5. In Reaper - use click track for difficult vocal sections.

I am looking forward to your vocal sessions and hope to learn more from you.

Well Done.

Best regards
George

"3. In Realband - get tracks as good as possible..i.e. volume and panning.. remember to listen "

This one I'm not entirely sure matters IF you're dropping into another daw. If a tracks volume is at -10 and hard panned to the right, will that carry over with the drag/drop? Not really sure and I haven't tried. But I make it a practice to have tracks all the way up and panned to center, both in biab before opening the song file in real band, and in real band before I drag tracks out. A little investigation would tell the story.

If you're mixing within real band, or any daw, then yes- gain and panning matter a great deal.

Hi Dan,

Yes you are right.
If you take an audio track into Reaper it needs to be raw and as hot as you can have it without overdoing it.
I just finished a session in Reaper (new song on the horizon) and tried out various different ways to enhance the Audio.
My brain is totally fried trying to remember everything BUT I think that I am getting there.

Hurry up with the vocals Dan sorry I'm impatient.

Best regards
George

Well, it wasn't easy but here's the studio/vocals episode split into two parts-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S19t_gnJg4I

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRSTV-iaPns

I had a lot of film with this one but how entertaining can recording vocals and all that it takes be?! This should do. Hope you enjoy this. I'll probably record vocals for better takes, so there may be a delay now before I get to mixing all this.

Dan

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
