Programs Band-in-a-Box 2011, RealBand 2011
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop.
ASIO Driver: Yamaha ASIO Driver / Yamaha USB 01 Midi Driver for Tyros Keyboard.
Audio Interface: Yamaha Audiogram 6
Results: Works great here, low latency etc . . . I have had to reset the driver during sessions in Biab/RB. I experience latency and hiss when the driver needs a reset. I believe my background apps cause this, I don't shut everything down while working in those programs.

The devices and ASIO drivers I use are: Presonus (FirePod) driver version 1.15.0.0 and Roland (Edirol FA-66, driver version 1.00. Both devices are firewire. I use them in conjunction with SONAR 5 Studio edition,
Notion 3, and BBW (since BBW version 2006 for Presonus and BWW 2008 for Edirol). These drivers run on a single CPU notebook (1.25 GB Ram, XP Professional) as well as a desktop dual-core AMD (2 GB memory, XP Media Edition). Latency is ~3ms or less with my buffer and sampling rate settings for either device or driver. I've never had an issue with either driver with any of the apps above. In both scenarios (but primarily the desktop) I use a combination of soft synths (built-in SONAR and also Dimension Pro), as well as Yamaha Motif Legacy and Yamaha rack ES. On the both units, I use hardware monitoring through either the Presonus or Edirol.

Other factors:

I have streamlined the settings in XP for both platforms, eliminating or disabling services I don't need. This makes a significant difference. I use ESET SS version 4 (and had used earlier versions) for firewall and Anti-virus due to it's small footprint and low overhead. I will turn it off if using several soft synths and more than 18 tracks.

Neither platform has networking enabled during audio sessions.

Additionally, I use the Edirol device and (updated driver) on a Windows 7 notebook (i7, 4GB memory, Windows 7 Professional).

Hope this helps

Program(s): Band-in-a-Box 2011 and RealBand 2011
OS: Windows XP PRO 32
ASIO Driver: cmasioppcix (used with new creative chip)
Audio Interface: Auzentech Meridian G2
Results: Doesn't work with BIAB or RB; had to switch to ASIO4All.

I suspect this will be a problem as more soundcards use the C-Media CMI8788 Oxygen HD PCI Audio Processor. too bad.

Program: Band-in-a-Box 2011, Real Band 2011
OS: Windows 7 SP1
ASIO Driver: M-Audio USB 2.0 ASIO
Audio Interface: M-Audio Fast Ultra 8R
Results: No problems whatsoever. As usual cannot use ASIO in two programs at same time - but then I run BIAB with MME and all works.

BTW - I think Processor speed and power has a lot to do with the latencies achieved - more power, lower latency.

Are there still issues with ASIO???

I have just setup a new computer for audio work. This is a Intel-based i7-2600K with 8GB running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. Audio interface is a Lynx AES16e to an Aurora16. I am running the latest ASIO drivers for the AES16e board.

I installed Biab 2011 UltraPack and RealBand 2011 from the product hard drive. And then updated to the most recent versions on the web site. Everything went well and appears to work fine. EXCEPT I cannot get the ASIO drivers to work with BiaB. THE ASIO DRIVERS WORK PERFECTLY WITH REALBAND. MME does work for BiaB so I can use that. I am only trying to run one program at a time and have even rebooted between attempts with no change in the results.

Any chance of a fix for the ASIO driver problem?? I searched the forums and the Technical Support FAQ but couldn't find anything.

Thanks

In BiaB you have to use 16/44 sample rate, just in case that was the issue. RB allows many more.

I double checked just now to make sure. I am definitely using 16/44.1.

Soundcard should be unlocked so that a host program can control the samplerate.

There may be an issue where the soundcard is locked to 44.1 but BiaB is still looking to grab it.

Also, if you have any other audio program already open and it is set to use ASIO drivers, it may just be the situation where sharing the driver won't work when in ASIO mode.

Peter - and others,

Thanks for responding.

No other programs are open. The card is not locked - other programs have no trouble changing the sample rate on the fly. I have rebooted and only run Band in a Box and still have the problem. Like I said - there is absolutely no problem using the ASIO drivers with RealBand. I don't know what Band in a Box thinks it is sharing the ASIO driver with if that is the case. I have run every other audio program I use successfully using the ASIO drivers - including RealBand. Programs also run include: Sonar X1, Adobe Audition 3.1, Sony Vegas 10, Sound Forge 10, Melodyne Editor, and Melodyne Studio - among others.

There must be some difference between how Band in a Box and RealBand are interfacing with the ASIO drivers. I have compared the settings in the dialog box for selecting the Audio Drivers in both BiaB and RB but do not see any differences. I have used the default settings. This is a clean install on a new computer

Good clarification, Don.

One more thing -- does it work okay when "MME" (which is actually selecting Windows Sound WDM driver) is selected in the BiaB Audio Settings?

If so, its not a kill to use MME with BiaB, I do that routinely even though my chosen soundcards at the moment all work and play well with the ASIO drivers. I keep BiaB on MME so that I can open my other sequencer programs at the same time, keeping those set to use the ASIO drivers of the same soundcard. No conflicts when both are open and I want to use the Drag 'n Drop BiaB feature to build a sequence.

But I don't mean to imply that we shouldn't get more robust ASIO support from inside BiaB...

Hi Mac,

It works fine with the MME drivers so I am okay with using that. I just wanted to make sure that:

1) I wasn't missing something obvious.
2) that the feedback got to the folks at PG Music so they can maybe "fix" it. Whatever they are doing with ASIO in RealBand seems to work better with my sysem configuration.

I realize that my system may not be "typical" but I have noticed several people on the forums using similar equipment. The Lynx ASIO drivers are pretty stable and are in use in a lot of studios.

I use the system mainly for studio recording but we use Biab once in a while for fun or for adding parts for one of our clients. I have actually used the song generation feature to generate bed tracks for a podcast customer. It is now his theme song. He couldn't be happier and all I did was do a little tweaking to what BiaB generated. I upgrade every year but really only use it for a few hours a year. I remember having ASIO problems a few years ago but I seem to remember that it was fixed at some point. I'm not 100% sure though.

Well, Don, I use BiaB quite a lot for radio broadcast purposes, theme songs, jingles, ads, plus for Industrial Music clients. That's the real base money for my little ome studio operation, not being into the current popsong marketing at all.

BiaB is an incredible tool for that.

One thing to realize about ASIO vs Windows Sound WDM is that both will make *identical* PCM digital audio files when presented with the identical inputs.

The only real advantage to using ASIO drivers has to do with latency time of monitoring when actually recording tracks. Especially true when attempting to use softsynths, software samplers or VST/DXi effects in realtime while recording, the use of ASIO is not really necessary when we are simply creating tracks with BiaB for export to a DAW program. So I keep Band in a Box set to MME (WDM) at all times anymore, leaving the ASIO drivers open and available for the use of whatever full-fledged multitrack recording DAW software I've choosed to use for a particular project and have no problems using it that way.

Thanks for clearing that up Mac. I also use the MME drivers in BB to enable me to open Adobe Audition (or Pro Tools) at the same time, and have always wondered if the MME drivers would give me the same sound quality when creating tracks in BB

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
