I haven't really tried all the addons in BIAB 2009. Do any of them "teach" chord recognition?
What I would be interested in in learning how to idenify chord progressions by ear. There are certain ones that I know in a heartbeat, like a 1-4-5 type progression. But when it goes off into the minor keys it can get tricky. I can usually figure them out if I have a guitar in hand, but it would be practical sometimes to figure out the chords when you do not have immediate access to an instrument when a song is being played. I don't really need to identify the exact chords (which I imagine would require perfect pitch) ....just the chord's realtionships relative to each other. If done of the pg music has this, could you recommend some other software that could do this?

Thanks

The BIAB Ear Trainer is the place to go.

Start with Interval Recognition first, though.

Keep it with the Same Root until you can nail all twelve intervals up and all twelve intervals down pretty well.

Then start adding the Chords there to your "game playing" learning session, a few at a time starting with the basic four -- Major, minor, diminished and Augmented. Set it for Root position first, then expand that for the basic four. Then start adding more complex extensions, starting with the dominant 7th.

That little piece of BIAB is worth a LOT more than the price for BIAB -- if you take the time each day to work with it for just ten to twenty minutes. It will open up your musical abilities.

I tried the interval trainer. That works well.
I briefly tried the chords but, i couldn't get it to just show the 4 chord groups you mentioned. Either I get the entire first column of chords (which is a bit overwhelming) , or the entire 1st and second column of chords (even worse!). Is there a way I can make it show only the 4 chord types you mentioned and slowly add to it as you suggested?

Thanks

Yes, my bad, been awhile and I was working from memory.

The lowest level we can set includes those 8 basic chords in the first column.

Set to those and start working with them, don't be daunted and don't be intimidated to quit, ten minutes a day is all it takes.

My grandkids are way ahead of the game because of this Ear Trainer. I didn't get to this stuff until my junior high years -- and even then it took two students to do what we can now do with the computer -- one to know and play a chord on the piano and the other to attempt to identify it. Imagine my surprise when I found out that for most folks this was university or college level stuff...

Helps to work with it in bursts throughout the day, I've found.

Like a computer game.

Set the bottom row of 3 dropdowns as follows for the simplest chords and inversions to start:

*Only selected root above

*Common Extensions

*Root Position

Start out with Key = C (you can change this one from time to time if you like, for it is the "taste" of a chord that you are after that identifies it, NOT the root note)

Ok. I just tried on my laptop. The chord recognition plays correctly. BUT the Interval tutor is silent (worked fine on the desktop). Also the Pitch invasion game works soundwise as well. I wonder why the Interval tutor is "silent" wheras the other 2 functions work?
(by the way, i would not recommend playing pitch invasion more than 30 seconds without some sort of tranquilizer pill!)

Well, both the Chord and Interval recog use the MIDI synth to make sounds.

*What is the MIDI synth selected in Opts -> MIDI/Audio on your laptop?

Default is typically the (yuck) microsoft software synth.

Sometimes the "Microsoft MIDI Mapper" gets automatically selected and this is a bad choice as it gets really confused.

Installing the VSC DXi and setting that as your synth is likely the better choice on the laptop, too.

If you've already done that and still can't hear the Intervals, try rebooting the laptop first. If that doesn't work, try the Opts -> Return to Factory Settings button number two.

I don't know if this is on point, but I've found that the Piano Chord Dictionary, by PG Music, really helps me with chords. I don't remember when or how I got it though. Obviously, this tool is of more importance to those of us who are still learning chords.

I have the driver set to Microsoft GS, I have the "Use VST/DXi Sythn" checked, and I have th VST/DXI synth setting as the "Edirol". And I have "Route Midi through driver" checked. BIAB crashed.

Uncheck "route MIDI thru driver" -- which sends the Thru channel to the microsoft synth since its selected up top.

What other selections do you see on the righthand side of the MIDI Output window? List all that appear, please.

I unchecked 'Route midi thru to midi driver"

After unchecking I and opened up trainer.
The chord trainer was silent now.
I tried the interval trainer again and it was silent also.
(I shoud note that after clicking to hear a chord or note at the top of the window some text flashed briefly mentioning that the note or chord was playing - even though it wasn't heard)
Then BIAB crashed.

My midi output driver choices are:
Microsoft midi mapper
and
Microsoft gs wavetable sw synth

So check it back and try again after a reboot...

If all else fails, you know the drill by now, "Return to Factory Settings" and hit the second button.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
