Excuse my ignorance, but what's the difference between the two? Oh, I have both and plan to get the 2012 upgrade (from 2010) but I have yet to use RealBand.

rokq,

Have a look at the Realband videos (under the Support link at the top of the web page). That will help you see the difference. Realband is essentially a DAW with the added ability that it can create arrangements just like BIAB.

Regards,
Noel

If you never plan on recording 'live' instruments, then you probably do not need Real Band. RB has many features, but the main one is for recording yourself / others playing real instruments or singing etc..

You could duplicate Real Band with two separate apps, a DAW/MIDI sequencer and BiaB. Some like myself prefer to have the apps separate (I use BiaB, Power Tracks Pro Audio, Master Tracks Pro and Encore), and some prefer to have them combined.

Real Band combines many of the features of both Band-in-a-Box and Power Tracks Pro Audio.

There is no right or wrong way to do it, it's entirely up to the musician's personal preference.

For my purposes, RealBand allows me to make song arrangements that are not limited to the 5 main instruments of BIAB. So I can have 3 guitars, pedal steel, piano, strings, drums, bass, fiddle, etc. up to the limit of RB (I think 48 tracks). I can then cut and paste sections, delete sections or move sections of each instrument pretty much at will. Very useful in my opinion for really getting the most out of the many Realtracks and midi sounds that come with it.
I use BIAB for building the basic structure of the song and often BIAB is adequate for a given arrangement so I don't use RB on all songs, but it sure is nice to have once you learn how to use it.
Good luck.

This is not correct. There are useful features found in RealBand that are not found in BiaB or a DAW.

An example is the MultiRiff feature (introduced in 2012).

Highlight a section of a track, choose multiriff, and you get to see a menu dialog of possible riffs that would work over that section using the chosen RealTracks. All the riffs are different, no duplicates. Audition them within the menu dialog, until you find the one that works best, and then insert them into your composition.

For example, you can listen to a bunch of different pedal steel riffs, until you find the one that works best with your song.
Or add 3 strumming guitar parts, all different, so that it makes a fat sound.

You can see the MultiRiff feature in action in the RealBand 2012 video... http://www.pgmusic.com/bbwin.demos.htm

Now THIS makes me want to run home right now and load it up. How many times have I generated as many as 8 solos and then cut and pasted chunks together.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

1. How much did you make in 2023?

Another example is that RealBand, alone among DAWs, transfers chord info directly from BIAB files, overcoming this severe limitation of the MIDI standard.

Yes! fantastic and useful feature, even for guitarist and educators, it come as a great resource to get stimulant ideas for songs, backing tracks and compositions. Also it is time saving as it make easier to get a suitable riffs on your taste. I was amazed with MultiRiff in RealBand!

I think RealBand is really a unique tool by combining cool DAW features and BiaB power in one pack.

NOTE about the Multi-riff selector... this is a GREAT new feature! ...

...but if your song has any tempo changes in it, the hightlighted section will regenerate but a portion of the wave form after the regen'd section will be erased. Sure hope this gets fixed ASAP.

Right Mitch, That does happen with certain tempo changes in a song, and will be fixed in the next free patch build. In the meantime, if you choose a blank track to work with (or have a song that doesn't have those tempo changes prior to the point of insertion), the issue won't happen.

Great Peter. Yes, that is the work around for now... I use a blank track for any/all regen stuff on tunes with tempo changes. A lot of my tunes only have ritard endings, so the tempo change is after the point of insertion, but still the wave form gets erased.

It IS a great time saver and wonderful new feature !

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
