Just on a hunch Don, try Revo, a very good uninstaller program. You can download the freeware version here, on the lower right side:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

This program has helped me out a number of times and does a very good job of removing any registry leftovers.

I thought we hit pay-dirt but Revo wouldn't find the persistent icons. Also, Hunter Mode didn't seem to do anything - no indication it was doing anything.

I was going to suggest White Out or a .44, but I changed my mind. Man's got to know his limitations.

OK - you keep trying every app thrown your way and since a FEW posts ago you indicted they were "multiplying" so this isn't getting better

Start back at square ONE

WHERE does the shortcut think it is on the HDD? (right click - look at properties) and report back

OK Don...one last trick from me.

1. Right click on the evil desktop icon. In the pop-up that opens click "Cut".

2. Now, open your Documents library (where you keep your documents, text files, etc)...perhaps in your case: C\Users\Don\My Documents.

3. Once this is open and you can see your docs, right click on a document or text file (anything but another folder)and from the box that appears click "Paste". This will paste the icon file into your "My Documents" folder. It may put it in alphabetical order.

4. Find the file, right click it and hit "Delete"

I got to step 3 and it said "File not found". I truly appreciate your effort. Thanks.

Don,

Sorry for the slowness back

Usually if the thing points to C:\users\name\desktop directly then, as you already know, it thinks there is a FILE (of some type) there not a shortcut. The shortcuts stored in C:\users|name\desktop refer to OTHER items SOMEWHERE else on computer and all of those have file extensions of “.lnk”

Now I've re-read all the posts and unless I missed it the obvious question is have you actually looked in that directory and is there or is there NOT actually a zero (0) byte file by that name at C:\users\don\desktop ? and if there is one I’d like to know the file EXTENSION.

Sorry sounding like the guy in India for Dell or MS or HP or..)

Out of curiosity are there OTHER accounts with other user names on that particular PC and do you ever use them – this includes the Admin account?

This might require you simply to go back to the “OLD DOS ways” and go to cmdline, navigate to that folder and try to delete it that way (probably won’t work but worth a shot)

Don,

I don't know if you've tried this.

Left click and hold on the stubborn icon, then drag to the Recycle Bin.

Here is what I would try to do:

Open a command prompt and type (keep the quotes as I've typed them):

c:
cd "c:\Users\Don\Desktop" <- this assumes your computer username is Don
del "Tompall the Glaser*.*"

See if that makes it go away.

And if the above doesn't work, then reboot your computer and press F8 while booting to get the boot menu. Select to boot to command prompt. Once the command prompt displays, type the same commands.

Reboot back to Windows and see if the file is gone.

Perfect! Great suggestion John! Glad you finally have some joy there Don. I know these nagging little things can be a real pain. They keep me up at night!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
