OK, right up front, I'm a MIDIOT ! So be nice ?... Just bought a used M-Audio Keystation 61es ($40) and I have no clue how to hook it up and test it, then actually record something with it. So.. Keystation ...plug what into what ... etc. Then, in Real Band the configs to play and record. Win 7 64 bit, RealBand 2012 latest build, Tascam US-144 interface, ASIO drivers, Garritan GPO and JABB. Do I want to use midi cable to the Tascam or just USB to a computer port ? Then step-by-step as to setting up MIDI drivers etc.

1. get the manual 2. You need drivers for Win7x64 ( I have an 88 )Class complient in XP not 7 Once drivers are installed: 1. USB cable for the 61 to the computer. Setting up MIDI on these is very weird that's why you need to read the book for instructions. Get your feet a little wet and then I'll be able to better help you out. First assignment is to set it up to transmit on only one midi channel. I recommend channel 1 as it's not being used by BIAB or RB for anything. Then set up Garritan in standalone mode & set it to receive on channel 1. You get this far the rest is easy.

John,
1...check - Did a controller reset (I think) to start out fresh 2...check Got the Win 7 x 64 drivers installed and they are recognized by RealBand.
Yes, I'm fiddling with the stuff all the while.
I have Garritan stand-alone up with a Steinway on track 1. Selected the 61es as the midi input device in Garritan, selected ASIO driver and the Tascam as the audio device. I set the 61es to channel one (advanced functions -> hit the lowest 'D' note, D1 (channel 1) per the manual)... nada sound in Garritan. I can play the virtual keyboard in the UI but not from the 61es.

Get it to transmit on one channel. In RB: 1.Enable THRU- verify you can here the synth playing. 2.Arm a midi track for recording- hit record 3. When done it'll ask to keep the take.Yes 4. You should see data on the track and also here it. 5. You can, cause it's midi, change what ever synth & patch you want to use.

Thanks John !
In RB, enabled THRU with default settings. I can hear only SOME notes live.
Did the record test. Only recorded SOME notes (same ones I could hear using THRU). As I said, this is a used keyboard and may be faulty ? That's the 1st thing I'm trying to determine. Got it at a pawn shop and can return it if need be.

At first I thought what a great deal. You should be able to monitor the midi activity through some VSTi or DXi - at least see the activity if notes are being transmitted as you move along the keyboard. Try any of these:

I think it has issues.

mitch - one last thing to take a look at - does the keystation have zone setups that perhaps persist, where there's a split keyboard setup that might be sending on different midi channels and whatnot?
I would take a look at the midi monitor I linked to - it should gather all the midi output - see if there is anything coming from the dead keys. If they are individual keys inside of a group, then I would say the thing is bad.

Thanks Scott. Yes will test it one more time tonight. Would the Big Piano in BIAB serve as a visual on if keys are sending data ? I'll check into the links you sent as well. Thanks.
I may just return it and get the Keyrig 49 new. I'm not a keyboard player and will only use it to input string and horn parts, one finger or basic chords. That should be fine for my application.
Are these units finiky or unreliable ?

No zones. very basic sort of. I think it's dead but would check further with the midi monitor.

I think it's faulty and is going back today. Looking at the Keyrig 49 instead (NEW). I think it will suit my limited needs.

I don't know if the keybed is the same, but I have an Oxygen 49 controller from M-Audio. I wouldn't say that it's finky - but the keyfeel is pretty crummy.
I can't say about the 'Big Piano' - you really don't need an instrument to look at the transmitted MIDI data. In fact, you should be able to just do this by recording and looking at the Event List in RB/PTPA/BIAB. Hit record on a track and walk up through a chromatic scale where you think there are dead zones and look at the event list that results. If there are missing notes, repeatably bad (upon several times through the scales), it's bad - plain and simple.
If it's intermittently bad (not the same notes being skipped), then there is a wider issue to try to figure out - could be bad USB connection in some way, some other internal issue to the keystation, etc.

OK, the pawn shop special unit is a dud. Stopped and bought a brand new one and all is working fine. If I get stuck anywhere, I'll yell for help. Thanks guys for all your input !

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
