I would like to be able to have BIAB play chords of my own devising - obviously only in midi, not in the realtracks!! - for instance, I've got a piece that uses mostly '2' chords (i.e. root, 2nd and 5th - no 3rd) and it doesn't seem to be possible to generate this..

Does anyone have any ideas?

What about a way to just add an interval of choice to any chord in the 'chord builder'?

many thanks,

steve g.

Hi Steve,

Wecome to the forums

This has been suggested a few times over the years I've been using these forums. It's always good to have the question re-asked.

As for the chord you describe above, I know of no way to accomplish that automatically. What I'd do is to generate it as a midi style using a major chord (root, 3rd, 5th). I'd then go to Piano Roll mode and drag the notes that are the 3rds of the chord down to the second. Once I've done that, I'd then freeze the track. If the track is not frozen, next time regeneration occurs, all changes will be lost on the Piano, Bass, Guitar, Strings tracks.

It's a tedious work around but I cannot think of another way to do it at present.

Regards,
Noel

There is one way. Firstly, copy the style you're using and rename it.

Go to the styles menu and select stylemaker > edit current style.
Select the chord instrument (piano) and under the pattern menu check mark the option ' When adjusting velocities use a single note only'

Then select 'VELOCITY adjust by this much (ALL PATTERNS)

In the box type in the midi note 52 then enter the value -90 to kill this note.
Do the same for note 64 and 76 if necessary.

Go through the patterns and mute any patterns that reside on a single midi note.

Save the style.

Your style will no longer output 3rds in the chords.

Bear in mind that the chord you mentioned R 2nd 5th is actually an inversion of both the sus chord ( R 4th 5th)and the 4 chord (R 4th b7th) both of which are supported. So to get C (r 2nd 5th) you would type in either D4/C or Gsus/C.

Hope this helps

Alan

PS. to make use of use patterns that reside on a midi note you will have to re-import piano part from a generated midi file using the style wizard. Then you'll be able to adjust all patterns in the above procedure.

It is very easy as Alan said, I find a style almost like and the edit it ! When I use midi stuff I love being able to make drums more tribal by dropping snare and cymbals in an"A" substyle and bring them back in the"B". You can make anything from scratch too, very cool stuff. There are all kinds of chord subs that fill in the gaps and people here has always helped me to find them. As always, wishlist something and people will tell you it's something that's always been there if it ain't. Then PG just might put it in, I always wished for Carlos Eduardo Arellano(Spanish Moderator)to have a style and they did it ! So anything is possible.

Hi

thanks for all the tips guys!

i found that, as Alan pointed out, using the 5 chord over a different root note works!

C2 is ok some of the time but certain parts still play the major third occasionally it seems..

haven't tried looking at 4 chords and sus chords yet but i imagine it will work more or less the same as altering the root note under a 5 chord (as above)...

thanks again fellas.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
