The clip is subtitled and well worth watching.

Given the appeal of a down and out person who experiences a Cinderella transformation and ascends to international adoration... the ratings such a story could produce make me suspicious that the network might have contrived it.

I'm not necessarily saying that this particular story is contrived for the sake of ratings, but... ran away from the orphanage at age 5? (I bet it was raining that night, and very dark with a scary wind blowing) Lived on his own from age 5? That seems so utterly unlikely and impossible that I have to believe they've stripped out the believeable parts of the story and told only the heart wrenching stuff

I watch a lot of Korean dramas, and a common denominator to them all is that they are shameless about using stereotypes to evoke an emotional reaction.

Having said all that, the kid really can sing, regardless of his personal story.

Pat, if that was not a true story and just an act, then his forte is acting rather than singing, because that was great acting. My suspicion is more about where a 5 year old gets "gums" and who buys "gums" from a kid instead of a drug store?

Even if the story is contrived, he has a good amount of raw talent.

He certainly had an emotional impact on the lady judges. A former workmate married a girl from Singapore and "gums" are totally illegal there. If that's true in Korea, it might lend credence to his story.

Did you ever see the movie "GAME SHOW" ? (I think that's the title... maybe not. It was based on a true story of rigging the early game shows to build viewer interest)

In the movie, they coached the contestants on body language so they would come across as sincere, not as though they were acting. Subtle things like dabbing a handkerchief instead of sideways wiping tears are perceived differently by the audience.

And for that matter, the only indication of being downtrodden was that he walked down the hall with his head hanging down and his arms dangling without purpose at his side. That's body language 101, the projection of poor self esteem.

I'd like to believe that a kid who lived a very rough life finally had his moment of glory. It is what it is whether I have an accurate understanding of it or not, I suppose.

One thing I noticed in that clip and also its a recurring theme in Korean TV and movies: When he said he was a manual laborer the audience laughed. There is apparently an achievement frenzy in Korea (well, Asia in general) and society there sends not so subtle messages all the time via the media that its not cool to be a low achiever. The end result is a society of high achievers.

Here we say, "Aww poor you... you're depraved on account of you're deprived" and then we sign the downtrodden up for benefits until they have no earthly incentive to pursue excellence.

Opps. Well, its already music related I'll stop there.

Hi Pat,

When I use Google to search for 'homeless boy korea's got talent', heaps of results spring up from myriads of sources and none of those indicate that the story is other than true. My own feeling is that the "Got Talent" brand would be damaged irrevocably if his story was simply a script for contriving success.

Here's an article in Wikipedia that adds a little more background information.

Hope all is going well as well as it possibly can for you and your family. You're always in my thoughts.

All the best,
Noel

And bottom line, it can't be any worse than how the hottest girls with the biggest hooters hang on in American I'm-Dull when they have no vocal talent. Of all the factions who should NOT decide that competition, it is the general public.

Shows like this (AGT is the only one I watch, but I record it so I can FF through all the hype) are there only because they can generate the most viewers/dollars. I would say that there is probably truth to the story, and that the reason he, from hundreds of choices AGT had, was chosen had a lot to do his story, and I do think AGT would coach to juice up this and so many other "interviews".

How many time do you hear "we need to take it to the next level", ramp it up" "this is the most impotent.." blah blah blah. I'm getting sick again. Where is the fast forward button ???

So believe the talent, not the hype.

Oh, but wait. I should say last year there was a guy who would dive from a high spot into a little pool of water. While watching (on my vcr) something looked a little odd. Yes, on slo-mo, half way down there was a cut, and the jumper actually switched positions instantly from prone to sitting. Obviously at least two jumps were spliced. Total fakery by the editors. Maybe the guy died and the producers didn't want to loose the audition. I remember goggling to see if I could find a mention of this, but no.

So don't believe the talent either. The producer are willing to fake that as well.

I think Jackie Evancho lip syncs.

Kelso,

where in Pennsylvania do you live? I'm originally from Altoona.

Maybe there's something in the Pa. water that makes us cynical. Everybody I know in Altoona is cynical. But then, they're in Altoona, so one might expect that.

We used to joke that Altoona was an Indian word for "all hope is gone"

Altoona is Algonquin Indian for: "Where's da beef?!" Cherokee for: "Of course, Custer wore 'Arrow' shirts!" Asian escort: "May I wok your dog for you?" Irish for: "#@&^#, Paddy O'Toole, Yar should be ashamed!" Okie for: "How y'all am?"

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
