I just dug out my Roland VS-840FX digital work station. I get a pain in the wallet every time I look at it. I bought it on sale for $1600.00. After buying BIAB in 2005 or so, I realized that the reason it was on sale was that it was becoming obsolete.
There are several listed on Ebay and only one was being bid on at $40.00 or so.
Anyhow my neighbors are having their annual charity yard sale so maybe I can get rid of it there, along with the ancient $2000.00 3.1 Dell laptop.
Both would make excellent boat anchors.

It still could have lots of life for you as a keyboard controller...
Plus, occasionally the old MIDI patches can be worked into new songs, as well.

Regarding a midi controller: I'd probably get quite befuddled at this stage of my vast recording career  . It does have a mixer section with preamps albeit with no phantom power. Don S.

Don, this workstation could possibly used for the tape transport and mixer fader controls for DAW software via MIDI , but the vintage might put it as too old for that. I see that it has ZIP drive for storage. That dates is pretty far back. It's hard to see old equipment get to the state of non-usefulness when you paid so much for it originally.
I think Mac must be thinking of a different product that must have had a synth engine in it.

The unit does not have a tape transport. Using the zip disk was cumbersome. To save a wav file involved transferring a small amount of data at a time while shuffling between 2 zip disks. Somebody wised me up that it was simpler to feed the output to the computer and save it as a wav file there. That's about the time that I got Power Tracks.

Don, I have the VS880ex. I use biab, rb, pt, and cubase. However, the vs unit still has excellent cosm modelling effects which I use. I also converted the hard drive to a CF card so the unit runs faster, cooler and quieter. I just trade out CF cards for different projects.I have used Reaper to export the Roland OEM files to PT (was a while ago). I think your unit has the cosm modelling as well. It would be too bad to junk the unit if it is still working fine.DennisD

Don, when I referred to tape transport controls - I'm talking about the buttons, not the actual mechanism.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
