The traditional song Columbus Stockade Blues has been recorded by many artists from rock to country and under several titles. Bill Monroe popularized the bluegrass version. A Georgia historical marker explaining the song is located in (surprise) Columbus, Georgia at the site of the old stockade. Janice and I slowed it way down for this more bluesy version. Yeah, it may be hard for me to imagine Janice in a stockade...but then she can make you feel the pain - or so I think.

We used to play a fast Bluegrass version of it years ago but Janice had the notion of attempting a more bluesy and syncopated sound. As typical with our efforts it took some cross genre tracks to get the sound but it seems to work...or at least it does today!

Bass -- we used, of all things the #1901 Bolero "Baby Bass" realtrack. It tends to compliment the syncopated rhythm track. I regenerated the track many times and just couldn't get the consistent sound that I wanted so I ended up putting together segments from about 5 tracks.

Rhythm Guitar -- this is realtrack #692 that gives the tune the syncopated push that we hoped for.

Mandolin -- just to flesh out the rhythm a bit I added realtrack #610.

Dobro -- I was insistent on trying get a resophonic guitar to work with the rhythm and the vocal; unfortunately there are no lead dobro realtracks that will work at this tempo and rhythm. Being stubborn I resisted the temptation to talk an excellent dobro picking buddy of mine to play the part. Instead it was cut and dice time again. The track is made up of pieces of resophonic guitar #584 which is a rhythm track. I was able to, hopefully, put enough measures together to simulate more of a lead sound for the short break. Took maybe 20 tracks to get all the segments that I needed.

Vocal -- USB mic. Recorded in one take and some EQ and compression added when mixing.

Mixing/Effects -- Garageband.

Hope we aren't wearing y'all out with posting so many tunes but PG Music makes it so easy that ideas keep popping up. Thanks for taking the time to listen!!

Bud

Bud,

Ya got the mandolin in there....glad to "hear" you used it.

This was a lot of work and as earlier pieces you and Janice have done "Great"!.

The slower version is very effective. The "odd" bass of all things worked great
for me.

You two have really introduced another genre of music, which is excellent.

Your partner....Ya better treat her right, or off the the Title place you go...

Thanks to you both for the hard work and time put into this piece of work.

Bud and Janice,

Excellent! As I have come to expect, very well done, and Janice really nailed the vocals, as usual!

Wow, you cannot tell that there isn't a "real" band backing you up! Persistance pays off going thru the multiple RT's to piece together something that gets you exactly what you wanted. Congrats on this, a wonderful recording overall!

Hi Bud and Janice,

It's all been said. This is exceptional. But then come to think of it, everything I listen to of yours is exceptional! I thoroughly enjoyed the listen.

All the best,
Noel

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
