I actually wrote this song a couple years ago, but I re-arranged and re-recorded it this past weekend. All the instrumentation on this one is RealTracks/RealDrum, and one track of tambourine. A Night Like ThisWords and Music, Copyright Stephen W. YoungBright stars shining in the sky tonight There doesn't seem to be a cloud in sight There's a big moon smiling on your car going down the road All the trees are swaying to the sound of the radio A little country, a little rock n roll The kids are sitting in the back seat Smiling as they hear you sing And on a night like this you can do anything Yeah, on a night like this you can do anything You haven't seen your mom in it's been too long Your daddy's getting older but he's still having fun There's a big apple pie on the table in the dining room There'll be be deep discussions of trivial stuff The wisdom in this house is more than enough The kids are dancing in the front room Laughing as they hear you sing And on a night like this you can do anything Yeah, on a night like this you can do anything Now the food is ready and it smells so good You know you'll probably eat more than you should The people you love gather round the table in the dining room As you join hands to give thanks it feels so right But this is nothing special, it's just another night The kids are sitting at the table Smiling as they hear you pray And on a night like this you can do anything Yeah, on a night like this you can do anything And with a life like this you can do anything ***** Merry Christmas! Steve,
as usual, the structure, mix and content of the song were all top-notch! I liked the presentation of the value to be found in family life, lived wholeheartedly and enjoyed for exactly what it is.
I especially liked when you switched the hook from "On a night like this" to "with a LIFE like this..."
After effectively evoking the good memories we all have, you made the association to the source of the goodness. It should be obvious, but I suppose we have reached a time when it sounds profound to hear it stated out loud.
How I envy your various talents! Keep up the good work!

Steve,
My parents lived about 1200 miles away from us, wife and 3 kids. We made some number of journeys up to see them.
Your story touched me so much, for it describes very closely the trips, the sharing and the times we all had together.
Think as we age, these times are more and more precious.
Thank you for you work and sharing these touching moments with us.

Hi Steve,
Absolutely wonderful on every level. I sat back, eyes closed and simply let the images flow. Your music never disappoints.

Lovely melody you created with your vocal delivery. This is a very sweet song. Nice work. Great writing. I think the BIAB sounds great, but actually may be too powerful for such a soft touch song. But the vocals carry this one through. I like it. Great hook line "on a night like this".

Great work! Along with everything else, I especially love the break at 2:30 with choral sound, and the ending.

A big +1
All I can add was you have set the bar a little higher for the rest of us….again!

Guenter,
Thanks so much! Glad you like it!
Pat,
Thank you! Your time and comments are always very appreciated. This song is a rather emotional one for me. I lost both my parents in the month of December (my mom when I was 18, and my dad 5 years ago), and they both taught me the lessons I hope I have portrayed in this song.
Frank,
Thanks! As I get older, I am certainly more sentimental. We had a house full of "kids" and grandkids over on Sunday, and lived this song!

A big thumbs up from me on this one mate. The only thing I would have done different is move the instrumental sections in and out a little more to break up the song a little and add some dynamics, the songwriting and vocal presentation could carry this tune with only an acoustic guitar if you wanted it to. This song is great on so many levels the drive of the music almost detracts, if that makes any sense.
Of course only my opinion, I really liked the song, its the best of the bunch you have up.BIB has certainly given your songwriting abilities wings I hope to hear more from you.
Rick
