Hi - a response to last post about singing prompted this one.

I've got a friend, and at times when he sings and I play, he goes out of pitch, but doesn't quite realize (in my opinion) just to what extent.

Is there a computer product that will analyze this for him against an mp3 by the original artist - or some other software tool to help practice the skill of singing in pitch, and give quantitative feedback score ?

My MagicSing Karaoke has such a feature, but I can't believe it's very accurate.

In fact, thinking about this in more detail - and given slurs and ornamentation, if there indeed was a product that did this, you'd probably have to mark the points in time when the singer holds a pitch steadily, and mask the off-pitch slur into or out of the music. Maybe PG already has something to offer in this area ?

Melodyne will show you each note you sing. But you need to decide if the note is the note you want to sing.

There's a virtual Electronic Tuner inside BiaB named, "tuner.exe" -- you don't have to start BB to invoke it, although it can, you can doubleclick that file in the folder or a shortcut to it and it will open and run.

Selecting Input via your soundcard's playback mixer properly can route a .wav or .mp3 or other audio file directly to the Tuner and you can view intonation in Realtime, readout in cents devication on the indicator.

You can also Highlight and Loop one area of audio that you want to pinpoint on and have your Audio playback software just repeat the area while you bring up tuner.exe from the background and take a look at the intonation.

And, Tuner.exe is a great way to tune yer guitar when sitting in front of your computer as well.

It's called "ear", and if your friend can't tell if he is in pitch or not he probably shouldn't try to sing. That simple. (Picturing Lucy Ricardo for some reason.) Another way to tell is when the crowd starts throwing garbage at you. (Picturing Bob's Country Bunker.)

There are NO tools anywhere that are going to replace time investment and natural talent. In any field. No book is going to teach you how to play the piano. That comes from HOURS of repetitive work. No tool will teach you how to sing on key. That comes from HOURS of repetitive work. No tool or book will improve your physical skills. That comes from HOURS of repetitive work. The books can tell you what you need to do, but you need to do it.

Note the common theme in that paragraph? "HOURS of repetitive work". Knowing the scales does not replace playing them. i.e. Knowing you are singing flat will not improve the
native ability to hit a note accurately. Knowing how to play scales will not improve your physical ability to play them.

There are no shortcuts here. None of us can put in the practice time for you. Just like we can't help your friend have an ear. That applies to every one of these 40 or so posts you have made this week. We can offer advice based on years of experience, but we can't practice for you and we can't make you know more. That's all comes with time and HOURS of repetitive work. I got to believe Eric Clapton and Steve Vai probably STILL practice every day....

This concept applies to cooking, auto mechanics, woodworking, plumbing.... you can read all you want but you need to use the tools A LOT before you will become proficient in the skill area. The books are the recipe, but you have to gather the ingredients and bake the cake yourself. Every one of those Iron Chefs started off in the business by washing dishes. I'd like to sing like Sinatra and Bennett too, but there does come a point where people need to admit that they just don't have it. I accepted that I can't sing well LONG ago and I would NEVER try to sing out front. I am a very accurate harmony singer but my voice does not have a pleasing quality to sing out front, so I don't try. "A man's gotta know his limitations." Dirty Harry taught me that.

All comes down to something attributed to many people as the source, and that is "If it was easy everybody would do it." One of my favorite quotes.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

1. How much did you make in 2023?
2. Send it to us.

eddie is right about the hard work. no getting around that. every time you try you get a little better or learn what not to do!

I don't agree that anyone has to accept that they cannot sing. there are a lot of very famous singers who have very distinctive voices that do not have anywhere the quality, purity, control, range, etc. of a Sinatra or Elvis. As much as I LOVE Neil Young, John Prine and even John Lennon, their vocal qualities are not necessarily their best trait.

You can learn to sing and stay on pitch. You can improve your range. And you can find your unique style of singing.

As per eddie's response, just have him listen to a recording or two. Heck I can tell if I dropped a note during a live performance the instant it happens. However listening to a basket full of clams on a recording should be proof enough for anyone.

I always liked the old Cool Edit for analyzing pitch, I fixed my daughters singing with it all the time.

Did you fix her live performances, or the post production recordings ? I've not used this program, but I'd like to help my friend develop his pitch - how'd you use Cool Edit with your daughter ?

For a freebie plugin, get GSnap from GVST. It will show where it determines the pitch of any input signal. Human voice is one of the more difficult music signals to analyze with all of the inflections and whatnot. But this will do exactly what you want and it can help to train you to nail notes if you really want to put the effort into it.

Note the analysis of the notes on the left, it shows how 'in center' they are to the keyboard shown on the right. You can also use this plugin to correct pitch after the fact, but I've had limited success with that - particularly with human voice that has vibrato, inflection, etc.

You cannot use it to pull a vocal out of a mix for analysis purposes. Gotta pay for that with Melodyne.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
