If you check the article on TechNewsDaily that I linked above, it will tell you that what you see and where you see it depends on the isntallation level of Java on your machine.
Disabling inside the browsers is detailed there as one of the ways to protect, so if you disabled Java in your browsers they say that you are inherently as safe as doing it in a Control Panel view.

See if Java is listed there.
No, Java is NOT the same as javascript (or JQuery or others)
Java is a separate coding format that is optional to install/update.
Make your sound your own!

However, in this particular case, it has been pointed out that even if you don't have Java installed as a program and cannot see it in Control Panel or the Add/Remove programs list, you could still be in a vulnerable situation.
The "Java" that installs only to Web Browsers is the key element here, in both cases.
That Browser element is how the threat can be downloaded into your system.
One more time: Turning off Java completely *inside each browser* is the way to handle this. And, it should only be a temporary measure until such time as a fix is issued.

JAVA IS NOT JAVASCRIPT
never was. no relation except those four letters. if you turn off javascript you will likely screw up how many websites work for you. you may wanna turn off JAVA but,

I've done just that.
Here's what I found on my machines, anyway:
After first Disabling Java in my two web browsers, Firefox and IE, I did have trouble loading pages on several websites that I visit routinely.
So I rebooted the computer after disabling Java in the browsers.
After the reboot, those sites still work pretty much as before now.

Are you disabling java or javascript in your browsers?
I've disabled javascript in my browsers and now several features on certain web sites don't work.
Java was not showing up in my control panel under programs, so I assume I don't have java installed.
So, I'm still confused. Is disabling javascript in a browser giving any kind of protection or is that not even addressing the issue?
Thanks to anyone who can clear this up for me.

Matt when I click on the link "I" provided there's nothing about scanning your computer. It's just the open source stuff about "NoScript". It indeed also blocks Java as well as Java Script.

Somehow I missed this thread, upon checking my system I had Java installed and I have no idea how it got there, I don't remember installing it but I get buried with things and probably needed it at one time I guess. I nuked it last night, rebooted and now I'm good. Thanks for the heads up.
