I think we could get a lot more control over what BiaB plays if each intrument had it's own chord sheet. Then you could have, say the guitar (track), play slightly different chords to the piano as an example.

The way it could work would be to have the default chord sheet exactly the way it is now and call it the combo sheet. It would be associated with the combo radio button and apply to all tracks unless overridden. This would ensure backward compatibility.

When you click on the guitar, piano or whatever button the chord sheet would by default have the same chords and part markers as the combo default sheet. Now if you decide the guitar should be playing a Csus while the combo is playing a C all you would do is change the chord in the guitar sheet.

As to the coding, BiaB would need to save only the changes to individual tracks in addition to the combo sheet that's saved now. Hopefully a fairly easy change. The actual grid component wouldn't need to be changed, just fed the extra info when the track changes.

All in all I think this would be a great addition to a great program.

Thinking some more about this idea I realized there's more really cool stuff we could do.

For example, imagine having the guitar play a few bars of the 'b' part while the other instruments play the 'a' part. That would be a great way to change up a song; like the drum substyles.

Or you could have the drums play a shot while the piano rests and the bass, guitar and string play holds. That would be great for endings or entering bridges etc.

This can be done already using a combination of generate the song using "the default chord sheet" then freeze all tracks and then, say, unfreeze the piano part and change the chords to suit or change part markers for drum fills, regenerate and repeat as necessary. Also works with holds, shots and pushes. Requires a good memory tho' to remember the original chords! or to save each incremental song with a logical name

I thought of this a few weeks ago and am having great fun developing a logical way to work, if that is possible.

I never thought of that. However, there are some drawbacks. First, it's a lot of work. Second, the tracks have to be frozen and, as you mention, you'd have to remember what you did to each track in order to make any changes.

Frozen tracks will, of course, never regenerate and I like the regeneration. It's nice to have slight changes each time you play a song. So I think multiple chord sheets would be a great addition.

Yes, we discussed related techniques as soon as freezing a track became possible. I have often frozen all but the drum track and then edited out pushes that played with too much emphasis. The problem is indeed trying to recall what you did and how. Even with the use of a memo, it would be easier if you could just save the song the way you wanted it.

So, +1

I forgot to say that something like you suggested would be an easier idea

I don't think I would want my guitarist to play a Csus while I played a C. However, if I wrote D13b9 for piano, maybe I would want the guitarist to play the upper functions of the chord which would be, in essence a B chord. Later, Ray

I don't know how complicated the programming would be, but the desirability of the feature is evident by the number of people who have responded favorably to the request on both wish lists.

And if having it ready in both programs at the same time holds it from being released, I vote for going ahead with a release of whichever version is ready first.

+1 In addition to combo or main chord sheet plus chord sheet per instrument, imagine if the chord sheets were tabbed at the top for easy access to each chord sheet. The user could work through a song one section at a time tabbing between the instruments and combo sheet to keep track of the changes made and desired.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
