I have a need to record both the background and my guitar parts over it. The guitar is attached via a pre-amp and when I hit the Record Audio it works fine. My guitar part is coming in loud and clear and I can monitor the guitar and the backing BIAB song via my speakers. However, the recording just seems to be of my guitar, and not the backing track. When I press play in BIAM I hear both parts. But when I render via Render Midi to Stereo wave, I only get my guitar part. The BIAB background is silent. I have looked in the online manual. I am using my PC's sound card and the instructs say I should be able to see all the inputs (and set their volume) in the soundcard's properties. But I don't see this screen. So my question is "if BIAB is recording my guitar and is able to play it back with the BIAB background when I hit play, how come I can't render that? I am using Realtek High Defintion Audio. Can someone tell me how to render what I hear to an MP3?

P.S. Never midn that. I unchecked the dxi synth (#2) and the sound came back. So I am back to not being able to render properly. I guess if I could render the background and the guitar separatly, I could combine them with Audacity?

To Render all tracks, open your realtek's mixer applet by doubleclicking on the little speaker icon by the clock.

The first mixer that opens is the PLAYBACK mixer. This one will not control the Recording properies.

From the File menu in the Playback Mixer window, select Properties.

From there, select Recording Properties and then select "Stereo Wav".

Now try to do a Render from BB again.

All parts should now come through.

Hi wooliewillie,

In addition to what Mac suggests ...

Successively click on "Opt | Preferences | MIDI Driver", and the above screen will pop up.

Set those settings shown by numerals 1 and 2. If your computer is a 64-bit system, you will not be able to use the VSC/DXi shown by #3 (this only works on a 32-bit system). If your system is 64-bit, for the 3rd selection choose "Coyote WT" from the dropdown menu.

BIAB requires a softsynth to be active for rendering to work. It is worth checking to see that this is correctly in place on your machine.

Hope this helps,
Noel

Thank you both for your help. I have tried many different things. I tried following what mac suggested but my driver applet didn't look like what he said ti should so I downloaded the latest driver from Realtek. That still didn't work. Now I lost the playback. No sound comes out of the speakers when I just hit Play, except when I hit the stop button, at which time I hear just the last note. Strange. Also I have no midi sound card. So when I started this morning i was able to play the song and even record over it. That worked fine. The only trouble I had was rendering it only played the guitar part and not the BIAB song. Now, I seem to have broken my BIAB. Is there anyway to get it back to the default settings?

when I right click on the speaker icon I get a submenu Open Volume Mixer, Playback Devices, Recording Devices, Sounds. If I click on volume mixer, device (which is the only choice) I have a choice between Realtek HDMI Output, Speakers, or Realtek Digital Output. Right now I am set on Speakers.

Try doing a Bing search for how to access and use the software mixer applet for your Realtek sound device and your Operating System.

Your soundcard does not need a MIDI device, that's what "Use DXi" in BB is for, provides software MIDI synth.

Willie,

After reinstalling the new soundcard driver, did you fully shutdown your computer and reboot it? This needs to be done so that Windows can engage the new drivers.

Just a thought,
Noel

personally as I get ready to do biab recordings with my sax playing, I'll be recording using different programs to .wav files, then combine them later in a program like sony vegas or cakewalk sonar... I'd do separate audio outputs, then combine / tweak/reverb/mix them in a software program as a second step.

step 1: output biab to .wav
step 2: play along w/sax over the .wav (playing it to headphones in media player), by listening to biab .wav in headphones, while using a mic clipped to my sax, recording via adobe audition to wav
step 3: combine/layer the biab wav and sax-recording wav in sony vegas or other program

Thanks kenjazz. Your explanation is perfectly understandable.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
