Claude Du Val

©2013 Robert Randall Burke

He's the master of the London road
With the pistol and the blade
Stand and deliver is his only code
As he robs the carriage trade.

Many the gentleman has paid him well
For his leave to go their way
Many a lady who will never tell
How he stole their heart away.

The King's men seek him high and low
They swear they'll see him swing
But in the tavern called the Broken Bow
Of the Highwayman they sing.

They tell the story of young Claude Du Val
Of his gallantry and charm
And even though he'd robbed them all
He had never done them harm.

In Newgate prison they all came to call
The ladies begged he be set free
And shed their tears as they watched him fall
From that damned old Tyburn Tree.

The King's men seek him high and low
They swear they'll see him swing
But in the tavern called the Broken Bow
Of the Highwayman they sing.

Bob...

What?!?!... you couldn't get Kris and Willie to drop by for 10 minutes to throw some backgrounds on there??? Johnny and Waylon would have been tough, but c'mon!!!...

Gorgeous. Cool. Notching another on the genre bedpost.

Masterful lyrics. Superb production, mix and vocal. You are a BIAB god.

And... nice ending there, buddy wink

Almost always when I hear a reel, at some point in the song my mind automatically inserts the words from the theme to Gilligan's Island. But this time it didn't, and I'm thinking that's probably a good thing.

Your song reminds me of a lot of the celtic-story music that comes out of Cape Breton. Even without a lilt, Your voice is a natural for the style (for any style really, how I envy your singing ability)

The lyrics sound authentic, as though you had discovered them in a european song archive... and the story itself is entertaining.

The tempo of the drum caught my attention immediately and drew me in... but by the end of the song it's relentless pace left me wishing you had changed it up at some point to let me catch my breath.

All in all, this song goes in the folder with so many other songs from this forum that are rubber stamped with the words "DANG! WISH I HAD WRITTEN THAT!"

Good job, Bob!

Pat,

Thanks for the kind remarks. I ran across old Claude's exploits, and the song practically wrote itself. He was quite the rogue. In addition to being a highwayman, he was also a musician! grin

saying he was a rogue and a musician is almost redundant ;-)

Hmmm..... He played music for the ladies, danced with them, then took their money. You're right - maybe he was the guy who invented Rock and Roll! grin

Hi, Bob !:)

It is easy to run out of superlatives
with songs like this, and most have probably
been said already. I can only say that
I loved everything about this tune !

This is great. We've used a bodhran in a couple of songs and have roughed out the "band" for a new tune using it. The sound of it is infectious as is your entire tune. I can't add anything that hasn't been said other than Janice and I are both history fanatics and that is yet another way to enjoy your tunes. After listening twice I had to do a little research and quickly found this which is, in part, on his grave stone.

Here lies DuVall: Reder, if male thou art,
Look to thy purse; if female, to thy heart.
Much havoc has he made of both; for all
Men he made to stand, and women he made to fall

What a great subject for a song. And "little ditty" or no -- you nailed it. Thanks for sharing.

Bud

Bud,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm a history buff as well. I share your interest in the "War of Northern Aggression", since I have a direct family connection to it. My Great-great uncle was Alexander Gardner (http://www.civilwar.org/education/history/biographies/alexander-gardner.html ), who was Lincoln's favorite photographer. He also photographed the execution of Mrs. Surratt and the other conspirators at the old Capitol prison.

History is full of song material. (but I don't have to tell you that)

Regards,

Bob

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
