FIRE THE NEXT TIME

Apologies for posting two songs today but they are both short and we want to move on to something else. If I post them I’ll leave ‘em alone!

Janice and I originally posted a bluegrass version of this tune...that we were never completely satisfied with. It always seemed like a blues treatment would be better given the theme. After exploring an electric/drums version or three, we decided on just a bass, dobro, rhythm guitar and rhythm mandolin. Unfortunately a solo blues dobro is not available so I attempted to make up a short 8 bar solo out of rhythm snippets. Not to sure about how successful it was but it makes the song sound less tedious than just verses and fills.

The song is based primarily on three old PD African-American Spirituals, “God gave Noah the rainbow sign,” “I’ve got a home in that rock,” and “There’s honey in that rock” including some lyric tweaking of our own. So much white gospel and folk music can be readily traced to Black Spiritual tunes with a little research. A debt that is often not credited, BTW.

There is a famous line in all the versions of this song and it goes “No more water, the fire next time.” James Baldwin used this as the title of his Civil Rights book “The Fire Next Time” published in 1963. Some writers say that the spiritual was a “slavery code” tune and used to communicate with the Underground Railroad. I haven’t verified this. The phrase “honey in the rock” is thought to mean that there is some good in the toughest of places.

Janice: Vocal, Rodes NT1 mic interfaced via Blue Icicle to my iMac
Mixing/Effects: Garageband
Bass: 536 Pop
Guitar Rhythm: Rock 692 (syncopated version)
Mandolin Rhythm: Country 610
Dobro: Blues (rhythm) 585

and as to the dobro solo if it started at 1:05, it sounded fine to me

Another keeper from the dynamic duo!

Fantastic vocal and the dobro lead was fine.

Ps – you two should never apologize for posting songs!

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

You can post 50 a day if they are as good as these two. Another excellent piece of music and as usual Janice the voice the Good Lord gave you is amazing!

Janice & Bud,

You two's talent has been such an experience to listen to
and enjoy. On earlier posting you had commented on
crossing genre's. Whatever genre your crossing is
a marriage that's great for our listening.
Bud isnt' the mandolin a real find! pun intended.

Hi Janice and Bud,

This is amazing. When I read the title, I wondered how on earth it could be used as a hook. It's a great song and the two of you really gave it a life of its own. I've lost count how many times I've played it through now! This is world class from whichever angle I look at it.

Regards,
Noel

Noel: Thanks. It is a very strange hook...but it has a lot of history behind it.

Very nice song!

FYI:
Much of the language of the spirituals comes directly from the Bible stories that the slaves learned.

“… the rainbow sign”:
According to the Bible, after the Flood, God promised to never again destroy all life on earth by water. He then set the rainbow in the sky as a sign of His promise.
( Genesis 9 verses 8-17).

“Honey in the rock”:
Psalm 81 verse 16 :” But you would be fed with the finest of wheat;
with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.(NIV)”

“Fire next time”: 2 Peter,Chapter 3.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
