With respect Kevin, you should really put in the FULL sentences of what I said, not remove bits to make it suit your original post.

We are probably spending too much time on this minor stuff -- but I presented your quotes as I read them in context. If I didn't read them in that context, I wouldn't have posted them as such. It is no big deal -- you said you weren't upset and were merely asking for clarification. I believe you.

I hope you don't mind but I received a bit of a surprise after reading through the above exchange of comments and I couldn't leave without adding a few thoughts. My feelings were that for someone who is pretty much a brand new song poster on this forum, you're being given a bit of a hard time.

I'm on your side. For what it's worth, I did not read you as "jumping" over anyone. To me, your post sounded polite and sincere. I'm a bit bamboozled as to how it's been interpreted it any other way.

I've seen it happen before, though. Because writing lacks the tone of speech, every once in a while, things get taken the wrong way.

  • I have to confess. That happened to me just a couple of days ago! A good friend, and someone I respect a great deal in this forum, posted a comment directed at me that I read completely out of context. I was tired and could not see past my initial interpretation of what I'd read! I felt like an idiot afterwards when I realised I'd jumped off the deep end for no reason. Luckily this friend is very understanding *phew*! LOL!!! Oh well, the positive side is that it's good to know I still need to learn a few things in Life. Just when I thought I was on top of all that, too ...

Back to my thoughts ...

I never used to post lyrics to my songs. Then, one day, it occurred to me that by posting my lyrics, a few things happen.

  • My lyrics are time-stamped by the forum software and, as such, another aspect of copyright protection is added.
  • Google indexes my lyrics. This allows people to check the work of others to see if they are infringing any aspect of copyright. For example, if you put "dancing and dreaming in gentle arms" into Google, the latest song I've posted here is at the top of the search results. That link will then lead the researcher to my audio recording. They can then compare what they hear with the work of others. With an audio recording alone, it's more complicated to find via a simple search. (Because I'm a school teacher, I'm always using Google to double-check whether students have copied and pasted from the internet as a shortcut on assignments.)
  • People from all the countries around the world might not understand every word I'm singing (that good ole Aussie accent doesn't work for everyone!). Having the lyrics helps them out.

These are simply my thoughts. I just wanted to share them for what they're worth. Please feel free to ignore them completely.

My main reason for writing this post is to say that I sincerely hope you are not discouraged from posting more songs. After listening to "On Our Own" for the 5th time, I have the feeling that I, and others, are going to learn a lot from hearing your work smile

All the best,
Noel

And Noel thanks heaps for your support - greatly appreciated m8 smile

And your words of advice are well met (as were Pats) and all has been taken on board rest assured so to speak.

Cheers

I almost forgot to comment on the song itself!

First of all I like it.. it has a real "Dire Straits meets the Rolling Stones" vibe going. Are you Australian by any chance?

The music is where the Stones reference comes from, so I'm wondering if its your voice that makes my mind think of Dire Straits when I listen to the song

Country is not my genre, so I'm not the guy to offer edge-cutting observations from a technical point of view. But I can speak for what I LIKE, and it sounds good to me!

Keep 'em coming!

Thank you Pat.

You are spot-on with the Dire Straits/Stones reference. Mark Knopfler is one of my favs.

And laugh yep true blue Aussie!

Understand re the comment on critique for country. It sounds so easy to write a country tune, but it is actually quite difficult, well for me anyway. So those folks here are everywhere else who do it I salute you. It is a tough genre!!

Cheers

I too see the Dire Straits connection. An enjoyable song.

As a quick aside I had a quick chat with Terry Williams, ex drummer of Dire Straits, at a recent funeral. He is not a well man sadly.

Keep them coming!

Vocals (as noted) are a bit muddy, but an enjoyable song. Nice piano parts.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I'm late to the party but I'm glad I came!

This is a very good song. I would clean up the muddy vocals a bit and bring them more up front. I think that would take it over the top IMHO.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
