I am having problems recording BIAB, unless I use an external mic and would appreciate any suggestions.

I use an iMac for BIAB (and everything else) and an Apogee Duet to plug in my guitar. When I try to record a clip using Photo Booth, I get my guitar (in one channel) but not the BIAB track. I've got the Duet setup for input and output, and I get the backing track through it without problems. However, nothing comes out on the Photo Booth recording (unless I use an external mic and record through the speakers).

Thanks for any help / suggestions.

Cemil,

My simple suggestion would be to use GarageBand - it's made for multitrack recording.

Sorry, my original post was probably not clear.

I want to capture myself playing the solo on video. I have no problems sending the BIAB backing files to GarageBand, or then soloing on top in GarageBand. How do I get GarageBand to send the sound output to iMovie or Photobooth? I can use either to film myself playing the solo.

Btw, this is not an exercise in vanity - I need to send these to a teacher smile

Sorry about that! Are you filming with the built in camera on your computer? You can use iMovie to record the video portion while simultaneously recording the audio in GarageBand. There are several tutorials on you tube showing this. I'll get on a computer and find a link in few minutes...

Try these:

First one looks like it might be the best of these, along the lines of what you're trying to do. I'd love to see what you're able to come up with doing this - maybe you could post a link?

Thanks - will try them. I was trying to avoid doing any post-production work smile

I wanted to route the outputs from BIAB and from Guitar Rig into a movie capture program (Photobooth, Quicktime, iMovie), but that is far easier to say than to do. Someone recommended I try Soundflower. I downloaded it, but couldn't get it to work like I wanted. That program is pretty complicated to configure, then somehow the Duet was no longer talking to Guitar Rig and I went back to my old config. Will try when I have more time.

If I come out with a satisfactory way to do a vid of myself on the fly playing through Guitar Rig and using BIAB for backing, I will definitely post it.

Cemil,

Okay, I'm getting a little better understanding of your setup and what you're trying to do. I haven't really played around with this, but it seems to me that these video capture programs basically only can accept a single audio input (they can't "mix" or multitrack record). Maybe this could somehow be accomplished with a small external mixer?

I'm not really familiar with Soundflower, so can't offer any insight into that.

I've had the same idea as you - to be able to record myself (audio and video) playing guitar along with BIAB or a recorded track - just haven't ever really played around with it. I'd love to hear what you come up with for doing this.

Good luck

Bruce

Cemil,

Check out this page:

http://learningguitarnow.com/blog/record...-backing-track/

He's got about a 15 minute video about recording guitar over a backing track. It's done in Windows, but the ideas should be pretty much the same - just different software programs. Also has some advice about equipment, lighting, etc.

I was trying to escape post-production, but it doesn't look difficult to do. I'll give it a shot.

Thanks

This statement is of course relative to what you have to work with, what you are trying to do with it, and how good your skills are. I assume you mean in the context of a single guitar and vocal, and that's fine. Still, some will decide to devote considerable effort to post production of that.

Good luck, and have fun.
