My goal is to be able to play my keyboard using TruePianos as VSTi, with BIAB adding accompaniment. I've installed TruePianos as VSTi in BIAB and that seemed to have worked, but I have no idea what to do now. How do I configure things so that if I play my keyboard I will hear it through BIAB?

Configuration: I have a Yamaha P90 with MIDI out connected to Audiophile 2496 in a windows XP Dell. Audio output of 2496 goes into my stereo. I also have a standalone version of TruePianos installed and that works fine, so I'm confident the audio and soundcard, etc are working. Also I can generate BIAB chord accompaniments and they work fine. I need beginner level help, my understanding of how this all fits together is minimal. tnx

MarkL,

Welcome to the BIAB forum! I'm a current Mac user, but was on Windoze in a previous lifetime... You say the BIAB accompaniments work fine, so I'm assuming you mean that you can hear them play thru your stereo. If you play the standalone version of TruePianos, do you also hear that thru your stereo? If you open BOTH BIAB AND the standalone TruePianos, do they both play?

In BIAB, the "live" midi keyboard is referred to as the "THRU" track. What do you have listed in your midi input source and as your midi output source in BIAB? This will be found in your settings.

Unless it has changed, BIAB for Windows can only use a general midi synth. I don't believe TruePianos is a general midi compatible software synth (in quickly looking at their web site). I think you could play the standalone TruePianos and BIAB at the same time, but I don't think you can direct your BIAB thru output to this synth while the rest of output is played thru whatever general midi synth is selected in your midi output in BIAB.

I may be entirely wrong about this - hopefully someone more knowledgable will happen along.

I just started up BIAB........
Added True Piano as dll VSTi.

I opened the True Piano screen and told me it would only work with Cakewalk.
That you/a person would have to buy a license.

I did recently use True Pianos within Sonar X2 and was impressed with
its sounds.

That's correct

Yes

I can't use both at the same time because they give an error message about not being able to use the hardware on the soundcard. sorry I forgot to mention that information. The BIAB support line told me to install Truepianos as VSTi, which is what I did (see below).

Not sure I'm in the right place, but on the page under Opt-> Midi options it has checkmarks on "Local ON (Ext. Keyboard)" and "Turn External Keyboard's Local On at end of session". On the page under Opt->Midi Driver it shows the Midi input and output drivers as Delta AP MIDI, which I recognize as my soundcard.

Here's the response I got from BIAB support, I interpreted it to mean I could use Truepianos as a VSTi and BIAB as the host, which would allow me to play the keyboard and accompaniment through BIAB at same time:

Then get into Band-in-a-Box and navigate to the "VST DXi Synth icon" which is the silver icon with VSTi written in it.
Navigate to the track you would want to have it on (usually "piano") and use the top slot to select "Add VSTi plugin" and navigate to the location of the true pianos DLL file and double left click on it.

More information can be found in the manual by searching the Help index for -> VST Synthesizer

Same thing I did

I'm not sure what it means to "open" the truepiano screen. I go through the following steps:
Click on VSTi/Synth icon-> Click on Piano -> In the plugin column I select VSTi Truepianos. After that the Truepianos interface that I'm familiar with opens in a tab. I don't know if I'm supposed to do something else or not. When I play my keyboard I don't hear anything.

Yes it's quite a nice program, I've used it for years. But I've only used it as a standalone product so I don't know anything about digital and audio technology, however I'm learning.

Don'[t know about Truepianos, but I do have some certain VSTi/DXi synths that when invoked inside BB won't play at first.

I have to hit the Play or Gen/Play button first, let whatever song is loaded start, then hit Stop and after that I can play my keyboard and hear the chosen synth.

I also have to use ASIO sound drivers in order to play these in realtime. Too much latency when using the MME/WDM sound drivers.

I can use the lowly built in sound device in my laptop for this, using the free ASIO4ALL sound driver converters.

Don't forget to check the MIDI/Audio BB window for that "Route MIDI thru to" underneath the Use DXi button and make sure that the Route MIDI thru is UNchecked.

Breakthrough! While experimenting with that suggestion I realized my keyboard plays just fine as long as the accompaniment track I created is also playing. As soon as the accompaniment track stops, my keyboard is no longer heard. Maybe that's the expected behavior, but I imagined I would be able to play my keyboard by itself.

That doesn't seem to have any effect, but there are so many things to check and configure, there's no telling what else might not be configured correctly.
thanks

If you are using ASIO sound drivers with your soundcard, make sure that the "ASIO Always On" is checked in your Audio Settings. That button is located at the bottom RH area of the Options->Audio/MIDI Settings window in BIAB.

Try it both ways, I have one laptop running Win7 that seems to work better with that UNchecked.

I can play my keyboard when the song is stopped after first hitting Play and it stays that way for a full session as long as BB remains opened. If I close and reopen BB, I have to do that Hit Play routine again to get it back when using a softsynth as sound source.

When the ASIO Always On is checked, I have certain other recording programs that won't relinquixh or regain the ASIO drivers if they are opened and running at the same time as BB. I just change the other program to use the Windows Sound drivers for that session.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
