Hello, forum-folks...

I'm wondering if someone could help me. I made a copy of a song that I composed in BIAB in *.MGU format. This was done to enable me to edit the original and save it with a different name. The song uses a style named J~BRUB34.STY. VintJz-Brubeck fast JzWaltz. The "Real Drums" style is No. 24, JazzOlderWaltz^.

When I playback the song using "GenPlay", or "Play", I only hear the lead-in count, and then the mouse cursor turns into an hourglass, the program freezes, and I have to do a CTL+ALT+DEL to exit BIAB.

I played back some other songs I've composed that have "Real Drums" or "Real Tracks" in them but could not duplicate the problem, so, at the moment I'm stuck.

Please let me know if you need any more information, and thank you for your kind attention.

Sincerely,

bluage

bluage,

What version of BIAB do you? Also, are you running Sample Tank as your software synthesiser?

Regards,
Noel

P.S. If you want to send me the MGU file you've created, I'm happy to have a look at it. You'll find my email by clicking on my forum name on the left (Noel96) and then selecting "View Profile".

If I understand the problem correctly, other original songs play, and just this one does not. I concur sending someone else the file is a good idea, and you can't get anyone more helpful than Noel.

Worst case, you may have to recreate that one song; it may be corrupted. But I would first try rebooting, and if you still have the problem, do an Opt., Return to Factory Settings.

You said you made a copy. Did you do that via the Save As... dialog or actually make a copy in Windows Explorer?

Hello, Mr. Noel96...

Thank you for responding. I am using BIAB 2013, build 366. Concerning SampleTank, I don't have a reason to believe it was in use while I worked on the piece, but I will check.

I will e-mail the file to you. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Finley...

Yes, you are correct. The copy of the file won't play.

I will send the song to Mr. Noel96, as you recommended. I already tried returning the program to the factory settings, but I think that did not work.

I'm grateful to you for your interest in helping me solve this problem.

@Cuban Pete: yes, you're exactly right. I've never known anywhere where so many folk unselfishly pitch in go out of their way to help others

Did you try opening a new song project and then copying the chords into it? Use copy and paste on the chords.

SAVE AS simply saves the existing file with whatever is corrupting it with a new name. Try copying out the chords first and see if it will play with the default setup and style..... then if it does, change the style to match but do it manually..... see if it plays.

By taking it one step at a time and testing after each step you can possibly find and eliminate the issue.

Once you have it sufficiently transferred, delete the bad version.

Hi Bluage,

Thank you for sending the files over. As mentioned in the email, they worked for me. This leads me to ask for a little more information about your system and set up.

1. What are the specifications of your computer (i.e. processor speed, available memory, hard disk size)?

2. What operating system do you use (e.g. Windows XP, Vista, etc.)?

3. Is the operating system 32 bit or 64 bit?

4. Do you run BIAB from the USB disk or is it fully installed?

Kind regards,
Noel

P.S. In the meantime, try unfreezing the Soloist track before regenerating the song and see if that makes a difference.

Dear Mr. Cuban Pete...

Yes, I agree. The BIAB forum is populated by people who are quite selfless and enthusiastic about helping other people. We should elect them to both houses of our Congress -- that is, if they cared to run for office.

Dear Mr. Guitarhacker...

I think that is a practical idea. I will do as you say and create a new songfile with the same chords, style, Real Tracks and so on. Then I'll get back to you and tell you what happened.

Thank you,

bluage

Dear Noel96...

In the order in which you requested the information:

1) My computer's processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 running @ 3.00 GHz; available memory is 3.50 GB of RAM; the hard drive capacity is 300 GB.

2) I use Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3.

3) The operating system is 32-bit.

4) BIAB is fully installed on drive C:

I will try unfreezing the soloist track before re-generating the song, as you suggested. Thanks for your detective work!

Dear Noel96...

I just re-generated the song after unfreezing the soloist track. The playback went through all three choruses.

However, the black cursor that always moves from left-to-right, cell-to-cell and row-to-row, on the chordsheet as songs are played back in BIAB, did not do that in this instance.

Also, the mouse cursor changed from an arrow to an hourglass, and the program "froze". I had to execute an CTL+ALT-DEL operation to exit the program.

Hi again, Bluage.

Here's something else to try.

Right-click somewhere on the chord sheet and select "Song Settings" from the dropdown menu.

When the "Song Settings" menu appears, put a check mark in the "fast generation" option that I've put a red box around in the below image.

While your computer should be capable of performing the fast generation of Realtracks, it's worthwhile deactivating this as part of the diagnosis.

With this deactivated, regenerate the song. It will now take 30 - 60 secs to generate before playing. See if that makes a difference.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. It will also pay to check your video driver's website and see if there is an update. I've noticed from these forums that superseded video drivers can create strange happenings.

Hi Bluage,

I am assuming that you did a factory reset in BiaB and that you took guitarhackers’ advice and created completely new version of the song and you are still having problems. I am also assuming that you checked to see if anything is working in the background like an anti-virus or email program.

If Noel’s suggestion doesn’t work you might try updating all of your drivers.

If that doesn’t help you may have a bug in your system. Run a full anti-virus scan in safe mode, then down load the free anti-malwarebytes,
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
and do a full scan with it in safe mode.

If still no luck then run the securitytango: http://securitytango.com/

Just my thoughts – good luck.

You have a relatively small hard drive. How much free space is left? Have you defragged the drive?

Hello, Matt Finley...

Oh, yes, I defragment my drive often. Presently, I have 224 GB's free space out of 279, effectively.

However, that's only the C:\ drive I'm referring to, which is my "program" drive. My song files are on a separate 150 GB drive, as are my Real Drums and Real Tracks, which are on a 1.5 terabyte external drive.

Dear Noel96...

Well, I tried-out your suggestion, and do you know that it worked?!

I would not have thought to do that because I was reasonably assured that my computer was fast enough to handle most, if not all, of the digital music-making tasks I threw at it.

Nonetheless, your persistence at getting to the bottom of the problem is exemplary and inspiring. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

bluage

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
