Here's the thing - I am very used to adding an RT track to maybe Melody or Soloist when I want more instruments but HOW do I do that if I want to add one of the BIAB midi instruments that you find on the left hand side of the screen? As you can see I click on "Melody" and select "Vibes" in the box but I cant see anyway of adding it - it remains empty and right clicking to the menu doesnt appear to give me the option. What am I missing please? Cheers ian Noel - having to use Photobucket - I cant seem to get PrtScr to work for me.

The MIDI dropdown is dependent on the particular Style file having MIDI data on the track in question. If the Style has no MIDI data for the chosen Vibes there, you won't hear anything.
See where it says, "<Empty>" to the left just above the dropdown?

Thanks Mac Yes I see that. That was what I was getting at. I couldnt find a way of "uploading" the midi I wanted into the "empty" tracks and you have explained why. So - if a Style is set up (like P_PHIL_C Style is)as midi tracks, I can change the existing'yellow' tracks to other midi instruments that are in that grey box dropdown, and even change them to RTs or Midi Super Tracks or Hi-Q, but any others I add into it(in this case Melody or Soloist are available)MUST be RTs etc and can't be midi? I guess that is a bit of a rhetorical question because that seems to be the way it is. The Workround seems to be to make 2 SGUs, the second one changing the midi instruments to the others that I want. cheers ian

Six,
1. Click on the RT Picker (sax icon) 2. Select RT Picker dialog on top 3. This brings up an "Assign to this track" section 4. On the right are 4 options 5. Click MIDI
From here you choose the BB track and the desired style.
Percy.

Hi Percy Everything works as you say it does - EXCEPT that Nothing Happens - the "Melody" track remains empty and no midi is put in there. You can see I selected "Vibes" and asked for it to go to the Melody track and clicked OK. It didnt work. Any ideas why? cheers ian

You'll need to initially generate the midi track on any track other than the solo or melody track. As Mac pointed out, they have no BB parts.
So you can generate on the piano track and then just move it over to the solo or melody.
HTH.

Hi Percy OK - I changed Piano in the SGU to pick up "Vibes" and generated Play. It plays fine in that position. Then I went to the Real Tracks Picker Dialog (via Sax icon), clicked on Melody (where I want it to go) and MIDI. From "Instrument" I clicked up "12.Vibes" and under "From Track" I put "Piano" (where it currently is). Clicked OK and nothing happened. Did I miss a step? cheers ian

Ian,
In your last screen shot:
Next to the FROM STYLE; enter the style with the vibes you want
Next to the FROM TRACK; enter the BB part with the vibes, e.g. piano, strings etc.
Also, make sure the vibes play on a and b part markers.
BTW, I looked over the tutorial and you can assign midi tracks to the solo and melody.
Percy

I've re-read your posts, and it seems you may just want to generate a vibes solo.
In that case, all you need to do is click on the soloist button and select one of vibe solos.

Ian,
I've been assuming the vibes are in a BB style. If so, please refer to an earlier post. If native midi vibes are something different, then beats me. Or did you open up a midi file in BB?
I'm out the door for a gig. Hope you can get it solved.
Percy

Hi Ian,
I've been reading through the above posts about the Melody and the Soloist tracks. My understanding of these is as follows.
1. From a Reatrack perspective ...
These tracks can be used as locations for Realtrack instruments and thus it's possible to generate Realtracks using these BIAB 'slots'.
2. From a midi perspective ...
When it comes to midi, the behaviour of the Melody and Soloist tracks reverts to their normal, pre-Realtrack function. These tracks were designed as locations to store a song's melody or melodic improvisations. This is why when one records midi, it is only possible to record it to these two tracks. As far as I'm aware, from a midi perspective, these tracks have never been able to act as 'slots' for BIAB-generated accompaniments.
As has been pointed out above, it's possible to use the Melodist or Soloist to generate notes for these parts. Some of these generations may well fill the role that you need.
Other than that, it would be necessary to generate the backing track you want using Guitar / Piano / Strings, save it as a wav file. This wav file could then be imported into the Audio track and played as part of the accompaniment.
Note: If you have BIAB 2013, it would also be able to rename the wav file so that it becomes a 'Performance file' that could be attached to any track.
What I would do in your situation is to go to Realband. That will allow you to do what you are after with minimum fuss.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards, Noel

Hi Noel thanks for the info, as always comprehensive and sensible. I have BIAB2013 ( I upgraded this year from 2008.5 this year - what a Difference!). I have studiously ignored RB after a few failed attempts to use it - almost certainly ME, not the DAW. COuld never get the Drag and Drop to work for one thing!! lol!! I use an old DAW, Cakewalk GTPro2 (2003) which I love the touchy feely interface of, but I think I'm going to have to accept that things move on and I really should get a grip of RB. cheers ian

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
