I do hope it is okay to post this song here as it is a public domain song composed by the great Stephen Foster. If it is not okay, please let me know and I will remove it.

Floyd put me onto the Ozone software so I have downloaded the trial version and wanted to test it out on something. Hence my interpretation of this classic tune.

The real tracks are
RealTracks in style: 533:Bass, Electric, 12-8 Crystal Sw 065
RealTracks in style: 895:Piano, Acoustic, Solo-Accompaniment PopSlow12-8 Ev 060
RealTracks in style: ~526:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking Hank Sw 065
RealDrums in style: Pop128^4-a:Sidestick Brushes , b:SideStick, HiHat

Lyrics are on soundcloud

Your feedback, as always is appreciated.

Beautiful Dreamer

Nicely sung Joanne.
I did keep 'losing the one' here and there, I think it's because this song is supposed to be in 9/8 time.

Jo, Good job on bringing in the instrumentation slowly. Nicely sung and arranged. Ozone makes a big difference in the finished sound. Stephen Foster's song book is

amazing. Some of his lesser known tunes are great. Check out the Mavis Staple version of Hard Times. Thanks for posting such a beautiful version of this song. Tom

Joanne,

This is very good for your first try with Ozone. Ozone does make a big difference. IMO, it's a worthwhile investment. I have Ozone 4. The tips pdf on their site is also very helpful and informative.

Public domain songs should be fine to post as all copyrights have expired except arrangement copyrights - since you're doing your own arrangement no worries there. smile

Nicely done.

Stephen Foster's sheet music does have it as a 9/8 tune.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Beautiful_Dreamer_music.jpg

What she did is to invoke a more or less 6/8 style in which one bar is actually having to overlap two bars of the original version. With BB really making it all be 3/4 anyway, more or less, depending upon feel of the style, she made it work.

If you count it in 6/8 while listening to it, no problem.

And also she takes the liberty of singing a bit in a time frame that lets the singer imply a bit of the Rubato to it without actually leaving timing behind in the dust.

When she starts the first verse, she's "on the one".

But by the first chorus, she's starting to go for the backbeat feel on the three, lightly but politely.

Then for the second verse, its back to singing "on the one".

Continuity of execution like that is good stuff.

And it adds a bit of updating in feel to this old, old classic as well.

Very Nice Performance

And she has good pipes and shows a great ear for intonation, too!

Alyn - Thanks for listening. Glad you enjoyed it. I had fun putting it together.

Dani – I do remember vaguely that you did a version of this song. I will have to go back through the posts and have a listen.

Graham - I did notice the 9/8 timing on the sheet music but I had no idea on how to accomplish that in BIAB, so as Mac has said I put my own interpretation into the timing. It can maybe still stand a little more work.

Tommy - Thanks for the listen. I think I did listen to that one while researching Stephen Foster’s music. I will give it another listen.

Josie – Thanks for the listen. Your comments are always valuable to me because I would like to get to where you are in your writing, singing and recording. Going forward, I think I will purchase the Ozone software (Floyd ought to get a discount on his next upgrade for the clients he has brought Ozone’s way!)

John – Thanks for the listen and especially the comment about being good a choosing good material. I never really thought I was much good at that so it is nice to get that compliment.

Mac – Thank you so much for your thoughtful interpretation and compliments. I really did try to add a bit more of a modern feel to this old classic so I am glad you think I have achieved that in this rendition.

Bob – Thanks for the listen and the comment

That is very, very pretty (vocal and lyrics) and a perfect arrangement/production to go with it. Sounds great on our KRK monitors.

The public domain is a treasure trove indeed. And as mentioned as long as the song is truly PD you own your arrangement. We've posted many PD's here.

BTW, did you use an Ozone preset on it or make up your own? I really like where it ended up.

Guenter and Floyd - Thanks for listening and commenting. Your comments are always much appreciated.

Bud and Janice - Thanks. I am certainly enjoying getting to know the work of Stephen Foster and plan to do a couple more of his songs in the near future. On the Ozone, I just used the Country preset.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
