Hi Mario,
I understand, but that is why I was looking for a VST equivalent of this type of instrument. Really just for quick and dirty auditioning of midi files within the DAW. Since Ableton now only exists in x64 bit version then I need it to be x64bit if possible (to avoid jbridege)

For my occasional GM use I have an old Kawai GMega tone generator. I picked this up a few years ago for very little money. You might want to search Ebay and other places for a GM tone generator.

jonel,

PG Music included +++ Synthfont64 +++ for use with the 64 bit version of Band-in-a-Box. The version of the program PG Music provides has a built-in 16 channel midi player and automatically loads GM patches but that version only works correctly with Band-in-a-Box. However, the hyperlink points to both free and paid versions that are unlocked. Both require the user to manually load instrument patches.

Another program PG Music has used in the past is +++ Sforzando +++. When PG Music used the program it was available only in 32 bit but is now available in both 32 and 64 bit versions. The player is created and maintained by the same developers that created Rapture for Cakewalk Sonar. Again you must manually load instrument patches. The website linked above has a wealth of instrument patches to choose from.

It's not free, but I like using Halion Sonic as my GM multi-timbral VST now.

Cakewalk by BandLab includes the 64 bit TTS-1 in the download and installation. +++ HERE +++ is Peter Gannon's recommendation.

I've created a post in +++ Tips & Tricks +++ about how to use DX and DXI plug-ins in DAWs like Ableton Live that don't recognize those plug-ins.

I like Xpand!2 but just a note to OTHERS, not you Jim you already know this: XPand!2 is NOT GM compliant, it is not a GM module. Although selecting XPand!2 patches, per BIAB part, is not orbital mechanics either.

Xpand!2 at $15 you get a lot of very good usable sounds - so it is a good deal but it might get even cheaper at Holidays (it was last few years).

Another AIR program that's on sale right now is Structure 2 - $29, that is also very good deal, at either Don't Crack or Plugin Boutique. It is has same AIR sounds/samples as Xpand!2 only more of them - 37 GB's. Again it is NOT GM and is not as straight forward to use as Xpand!2 but is is more complex and flexible than Xpand!2.

LATE EDIT by the DUMMY, ME!

Its the other way around XPAND!2, for use in BIAB is a LOT LESS intuitive than STRUCTURE

END EDIT

Not intending to hijack the thread, but John, how do you find Halion Sonic, say on a scale out of 10? I am exploring it also - with an intention to possibly invest.

Hi, Trevor,

I find it on par with Coyote Forte or the TTS-1, and some of the sounds even better. I actually own the full Halion 6, and you get Halion Sonic with it (as a sort of light weight Halion for when you are just trying things out). But of course, you can buy Halion Sonic separately, as well.

I know there are a few other Halion Sonic users here as well, so hopefully they'll also chime in.

I have the Steinberg eLicenser (dongle) so I can install and use it on multiple computers, so I don't know if you can also do software authentication/authorization on a single computer. Someoneelse can answer that.

When you use it, you have to open the interface and set it to GM mode for it to work seamlessly in BIAB, but it seems to remember that setting from session to session. I did find a couple of basses playing an octave too low, but that's easily fixed in BIAB.

Thanks Jim, a lovely vst and well the price. However, I only get those lovely sounds when I use it with Ableton (which is OK because that is mainly where I will use it) but no sound when used in Sonar X3 or RealBand which I thought was odd.

The manual does not mention this though.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
