Been working on this song I wrote in 1991, still tweaking it but wanted to see what others think so far. I'd be grateful for some feedback, good/bad/suggestions.

Thanks
Paul

Paul,

Just my opinion of course, but I say you can stop tweaking right now. It is a solid beautiful lyric well produced, arranged and performed. Beautiful done!

Paul,

We're the new kids on the block here...2 whole days!

Our opinion you're done. It is a beautiful song as is with a powerful message. The instrumentation is perfect...we really liked that cello...and the rest of the music is a perfect fit. The vocal is strong and everything is well-balanced and perfectly panned. We can't think of a single thing you could do to make this a better cut. kudos!

Merry Christmas...

Al & Di

Paul,

Gotta agreed with Danny and Al... this is terrific. Beautiful instrumentation. A Top-Notch vocal performance. A solid mix.

After following all your threads about mics and monitors and mixing, etc., etc. - and the doubts you seem to be having, I wasn't sure what to expect.... I say you have no worries... It's working!! In a big way...

This is really well done.

Thank you all for your kinds encouragement. Its so easy to become blinded and think you need to do more.

Welcome Al-David. I've been a causal user of BIAB for 12 months and it has been a brilliant resource. I'd also like to give the people of this forum alot of praise because they really are friendly and very helpful. This is my main music forum for everything. It's brimming with creativity and helpfulness, whereas, in my experience, forums can be a dead experience Toontracks Forum comes to mind - no one uses it!!! smile

Thanks again for the kind comments, they do spure me on to do more songs. I did some songs in the early nineties and never got them recorded - well now thats changing.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks Marty C, Well thats been my conviction - to use what talent I have for the Lord, however performing live is not a strength I have. I did lead worship for many years, always made me nervous before starting. Now, time has past where I'm not musically connected to anyone or any church at the moment. My family and I are newbies to a church in our city since September. I felt I had written very average, non special songs in the early ninties but they were special to me, hence why I sought out BIAB so I could revisit these songs. I have no idea where this will lead? I don't see a commercial venture at all and I have no opportunity to play live so my question has been - when I record my songs - then what? I guess we'll have to see! BUT the journey is alot of fun eek

One thing I struggle is with mixing my voice. Listening to Cliff Richards new album today and noticed how his voice sounded just right. Not to direct but not overly done with reverb. Take a listen to how his voice is not "in your face" in the mix where mine is. I've played around with reverbs but never get that extra distance sound that you get from studio recording. Is this something unobtainable from budget home recordings?

Nice strings ... a little too much reverb on the vocals, you have a nice voice dont hide it behind reverb.

Paul,

I love it. Beautifully done and kept my attention - longer songs sometimes lose me. I think your voice sounds great. I like the mix and the reverb was warm without sounding overdone to me - but

This link may help you get the vocal sound you're after. Steve is one of the premiere mixers on this board.

Paul, Nice song. Well written and sung. The arranging, production and recording are excellent. The izotope plug ins may be of some help to you. Particularly the nectar vocal and the ozone mastering. You can buy them bundled. I really enjoyed this and look forward to your next post. Thanks for sharing, Tom PS Thanks to Josie for the link to Steve's tips and recording revolution.

Hi Elliot, I was going for that "live" stage sound and having tried a number of reverbs they all sounded wrong for me, a bit too dry, lacking a bit of space but that could have been because I lack the skill - probably!

Thanks for your comments.

Couple things I'm not completely happy with - guitar and drums, vocals could do with a bit more treatment I feel. Guitar sounds too harsh, I would like to record my own guiter as it may sound a bit warmer and less sharp. The drums intro is disappointing, I think my EZdrummer can come up with something better BUT, as I've discovered, Toontracks have marketed their products very carefully giving the impression it's cheap but it isn't. You have to keep buy upgrade midi packs to get a range of different styles. My EZdrummer has a pathetic array of drumming styles, although the ones that come with it are excellent. I need to buy some midi packs now to get the styles I'm looking for and even that's pot luck as they don't really give you many samples and don't list the styles per pack. I put a EZdrumming pattern to one of my other songs and did a A-B comparison between EZdrummer and a new style in BIAB 2014. EZdrummer sounded stereo and more realistic - nice, clear and punchy with a selection of intro's and fills. So I will be going down that route a bit more with BIAB songs.

Paul, excellent job.

I like how you build it as it goes on. You voice is smooth and fits this well. Often we are our own worst vocal critics. I, personally like a vocal that is a bit more upfront.... but that is a personal preference. I think the vox set perfectly in the mix. Not to loud and not to far back.

I initially thought 5 minutes plus was too long, however, it was over before I realized it. And P&W music doesn't have the commercial time constraints that country and other genre's have on them to fit into a play list.

Again... good job.

Hi Paul,

Your song is fantastic. The mix is spot on and the writing and performing are as good as anything I've ever heard. What stood out to me most of all was the lyric's perspective. In writing this song, you've created a very powerful composition.

Really well done!

All the best,
Noel

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
