"I was sittin' in the bathtub, counting my toes
When the radiator broke, the water all froze
I got stuck in the ice, without my clothes
Naked as the eyes of a clown

I was cyin' ice cubes, hoping I'd croak
When the sun came out, the ice all broke
I stood up and laughed
Thought it was a joke
That's the way that the world goes 'round"

Not exactly "memorable" lines, but the Bellamy Brothers had a way of taking a current saying, and turning it into a song.

"If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me."

"Do You Love As Good As You Look"
- Can you satisfy your man, like your body says you can.
- Judging from the cover, I'd love to read the book.

...he' an "Old Hippie" and he don't know what to do.
Should he hang onto the old, or grab onto the new

"Redneck Girl"
- her hands are calloused but her, heart is tender

****************

And remember that study some years ago that reported couples who "loved" more often, tended to live longer. Bellamy Brothers were all over that:

"Lovers Live Longer"
... 'cause the way that we're goin', we might live forever.

The Bellamy's claimed to be "the only band on the planet doing country reggae". No one seemed to dispute that! <grin>

"It's hard to kiss the lips at night, that chew your a*s out all day long"

Written by Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell, performed by the Notorious Cherry Bombs

There's a bunch of good lines in that song.

James Taylor and Peter Gabriel are, to me, songwriting gods--JT for his ability to express the heaviest subjects lightly (not take them lightly, that's different), and PG for his capacity for taking the deepest subjects and making them accessible, both in pop music form. A rare art, in my estimation.

An example from Taylor's "That's Why I'm Here" on the death of an addict, speaking to other addicts or those knowledgeable of addiction:

"John's gone, found dead, he dies high, he's brown bread
Later said to have drowned in his bed
After the laughter, the wave of the dread
It hits us like a ton of lead"

Thinking about it reminds me of my reaction to the news of Jerry Garcia's death. At first I was angry, but after reflection I simply grieved the loss of another artist whom I admired to something over which he had no power.

***

I was going to add something from PG here, but I'm going to have to do some more research. He packs much meaning into very few words, but in many cases you need the entire song for context. I'd rather pick out a verse or so.

R.

Richard,

In reference to Peter Gabriel, I think his song "Sledgehammer" is a pop/rock masterpiece. There's a ton of great lines and that infectious guitar riff just drives it home.

This is back when music videos were entertaining:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWJE0x7T4Q

As for James Taylor, his album "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon" is still in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.

Another submission for lyrics:

“I went to a little gypsy, out on fortune tellin’ place

Yea I went to see the little gypsy, out on fortune tellin’ place

She read my mind, … and then she slapped my face!”

I've always had respect for Mr. Taylor and not only because of his songwriting abilities, but also love the kind of musicians he surrounds himself with, their knowledge and abilities, from which he can easily keep pace, but also I think he has the ability to FEED off of their inputs as well, both musically and lyrically.

"There's always room for the BEST."

That "pursuit of excellence" thang.

"Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone..."

Classic use of the "when" opening line.

Songwriters should practice the same old school journalism mantra of, "Who, What, Why, Where and When" - the hard part is knowing which one to put where IMO.

Tell yer story.

Hal David:

L.A. is a great big freeway
Put a hundred down and buy a car
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years, how quick they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas

from "Like A Lover"
Originally by Dori Caymmi and Nelson Motta, but these English lyrics by Alan & Merilyn Bergman are extremely poetic. (Making sure I give credit where credit's due)

Brilliantly performed by Sergio Mendez and Brazil '66

Like a lover, the morning sun
Slowly rises and kisses you awake
Your smile is soft and fuzzy
As you let it play upon your face
Oh, how I dream I might be like the morning sun to you

Like a lover, the river wind
Sighs and ripples its fingers through your hair
Upon your cheek it lingers
Never having known a sweeter place
Oh, how I dream I might be like the river wind to you

How I envy a cup that knows your lips
Let it be me, my love
And a table that feels your fingertips
Let it be me, let me be your love
Bring an end to the endless days and nights
Without you

Like a lover, the velvet moon
Shares your pillow and watches while you sleep
Its light arrives on tiptoe
Gently taking you in its embrace
Oh, how I dream I might be like the velvet moon to you

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
