Beautifully crafted lyrics. I love the traditional style of writing. There are some great raw and gritty lyrics but I'll always have a soft spot for the abstract and poetic style! Take care. Greg

"The jeweler has a shop on the corner of the boulevard
In the night, in small spectacles, he polishes old coins
He uses spit and cloth and ashes
He makes them shine with ashes
He knows the use of ashes
He worships God with ashes."

I've been listening to "the Dan" lately. I love their unique style of lyrics. They are truly unique guys. Here's one of their lines I love:

Any world that I'm welcome to is better than the one I come from

Another phrase from the same song:

I'll be ready when my feet touch ground, wherever I come down
And if the folks will have me, then they'll have me

These are some interesting and brilliant dudes!!!

Ahhh yes, Steely Dan
How could I have missed some of the absolute intricate marvels produced over the years.
Great selection Greg

At Seventeen

Janis Ian, not 17 at the time, but still at the tender age of 22, penned these amazing lyrics:

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
In high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth

And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems, at seventeen

...

Great one, Trevor!

How about "The Dutchman" - Michael Smith

The Dutchman's not the kind of man
To keeps his thumb jammed in the dam
That holds his dreams in
But that's a secret that only Margaret knows

If you are unfamiliar with this song, you owe it to yourself to have a listen:

"They all said Louise was not half bad
It was written on the walls and window shades
And how she'd act the little girl
A deceiver, don't believe her, it's her trade."

Talk about words to live by from John Prine:

That's the way that the world goes round.
You're up one day, the next you're down.
It's a half an inch of water and you think you're gonna drown.
That's the way that the world goes round.

On a live version he tells the crowd how a girl came up to him and asked him to sing the song about the happy enchilada.
He said he'd never written a song about any kind of enchilada and asked her how it went.
She said:
"It's a happy enchilada and you think you're gonna drown."

Either way works for me smile

Floyd, thanks for the link. I wasn't familiar with the song. Absolutely brilliant lyrics.

I really like the way Margaret is brought into the song right at the start, but as though we've all known her for years.

I found a live audience version (amongst others) also performed by Steve Goodman,
that was another bonus.

I'll definitely listen again and again.

Cheers

Trevor

Probably some of the most memorable lyrics nobody ever knew or understood were those in Louie Louie by The Kingsmen.
Due to the dominant music and slurred words everyone seemed to put their own interpretation to the obscured lyrics.

According to wikipedia :
The Kingsmen's edition was the subject of an FBI investigation about the supposed but non-existent obscenity of the lyrics, an investigation that ended without prosecution.

For the record, the actual lyrics are:

CHORUS:

Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go

Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home

CHORUS

Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair.

CHORUS

Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!

GUITAR SOLO

See Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I'll never leave again

CHORUS

Let's take it on outa here now
Let's go!!

Ahhh, the amazing power of muscic!!

He ordered Chet's Guitar Course, C.O.D.

He knows A and E and he's workin' on B;

And me and the chimpanzee agree;

That someday soon he'll be;

A Cee-le-bri-tee!

Git it! Git it! Git it!

This thread got too long to easily search, but whether or not anyone has shared the following Sting line, here's a line that echoes through my head quite often:

"I don't every wanna play the part, of a statistic on a government chart"

Says a lot about a lot of situations where you can choose to stick your neck way out - maybe do something amazing, or much more likely - become a statistic.

A line that has always stuck with me since my early years in music:

"Give just a little bit more, take a little bit less from each other tonight"

This song was released the year I entered the 1st Civilian Division in 1969.

Carry on....

I didn't learn until the 1970's that "Poison Ivy" was about VD.

After that, all of the lyric made sense to me. ("The minute you start to mess around...")

Brilliant composition by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller.

BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is also about VD.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
