Hi,

I'm new and can't even get started. In the editable notation mode, can I make the treble clef staff go away? I can't read treble clef. I play bass clef. I want to enter a solo into the base clef line, but I can't enter any notes on the bass clef staff above concert Bflat, no matter what options I select.

Is this a drawback to BIAB, or am I missing a key step?

Thanks,

Geezer

Try going to Opt., Preferences, Notation. There is a place in the center of the dialog box to change "Clefs split at". Raise the number to C6 instead of the default C4. You will still see a treble clef (not sure how to get rid of it) but all your notes will be in the bass clef.

Stay tuned here in case someone else knows a better solution.

And Welcome to the forum.

ps If, when you are done, the notes sound in the wrong register (too high), we can adjust that, too; just ask.

Thanks!

I also noticed a little box up in the left that tells me what note my cursor is pointed on. If I mind the note duration value at the same time I'm watching that little window, then I can pick off the note(s) I want.

I'm not formally musically trained. IOW's, I'm a dummy; a dummy who is largely self-taught to play tenor trombone. So I'm used to ledger lines. When I didn't see any in the edit notation window, I was confused. Light bulb. The treble clef and base clef staffs are connected at middle C in music theory, so they are as well in BIAB. Now that I understand THAT, I can work it.

And I have discovered that I can get a chord progression of a melody line I enter on the bass clef by using the "Reharmonizing" feature. Baby steps.

Thanks again,

Geezer

Sounds like you're doing well!

Tenor trombone, OK. I wonder whose bell is bigger, yours or mine (see my avatar). laugh

Hi Geezer,

Welcome to the forums!

What you see in Editable Notation is mode is what the music theorists call the Grand Stave and it's not possible to turn off half of the stave.

What you can do, though, is to enter 'Editable Notation Mode', click on "Opt" (#1 on the image) and set the "Clef splits at" to C6 (#2). This will allow bass clef notes to be entered.

Here are some notes I just entered with the split point set at C6.

Hope this helps,
Noel

BAND IN A BOX CAN INDEED DISPLAY BASS CLEF ONLY NOTATION.

IN THE NOTATION VIEW, FIRST CLICK ON THE "B" TO DISPLAY THE BASS CLEF.

THEN, CLICK ON OPTIONS AT UPPER LH OF NOTATION WINDOW.

THE DROPDOWN SLOT IS HIGHLIGHTED -- BASS IS AT THE BOTTO OF THE DROPDOWN LIST, SELECT THAT.

NOTE ABOVE THAT THE "TAB" IS ALSO CHECKED, SO YOU CAN SEE THE TAB AS WELL AS THE BASS CLEF, THIS IS OPYIONAL.

THEN, YOUR BASS PART, WHEN YOU SELECT IT IN FUTURE, SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS:

Mac is displaying the Bass track (by clicking on the B). Be careful if you do this, because anything you enter here will be erased when the song reloads or regenerates, UNLESS you first freeze the track.

However, if you use the Melody or Soloist, you can enter your melody all on the bass clef just by changing the clef split point as I mentioned earlier, and you won't have to worry about the track being overwritten. The downside is that you will see the unused treble staff.

Also be aware there is something in BIAB called the Lead Sheet View (there's a green icon). This will show only the bass clef, and tons of ledger lines, if you have adjusted the clef split point. You would probably not want to set a transposition to bass if you use this view, or the entire melody may be in the stratosphere with ledger lines.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
