hi,

I am trying to experiment taking midi and putting it into sonar x3.
I do not want a full song, I just want to get a few bars from say the bass track. how is the best way to do that? I know I can drop a audio track and have been doing that without problem in daw mode, but midi is throwing me for a loop.(pardon the pun) In addition... if a track is a real track is there a underlying midi track? and if so how can I retrieve it?

May not be closest route, but here would be my method.

1. Save As Midi type 1
2. Load into Realband.
3. Delete all tracks except the bass.
4. Delete part of midi bass you do not want. Using the Piano Roll might help here.
5. Save as midi type 1.
6. Load into Sonar.

Just one method.

Step 4 you could also highlight and delete part of the midi track.

I drag and drop MIDI tracks to Sonar x3 all the time. Go to drag and drop mode in BiaB, open Sonar and drag only the MIDI bass track into Sonar. You can delete the part(s) of the track in Sonar.

Thanks for the quick responses....I did some more research and this pertains more to my second question.. Looks like in x3 I can drop the real track audio and convert it to midi using melodine feature

I'll try this out tonight.... This has the potential to say switch drum kits for real drums or different bass settings for bass real tracks I tell you the combination of biab and sonar has really created a monster tool only prob is the bloody learning curve smile

This will work IF you have the Melodyne that came with X3 AND a monophonic audio track. If you have a polyphonic audio track you will need to upgrade Melodyne to Melodyne Editor.

So are you considering the drum track if done as a single track polyphonic?

I know the bass line would be monophonic

bostonx,

There are a huge number of excellent midi-only styles that come with BIAB. These would be worth investigating, if you haven't done so already.

From what I read on these forums, if you load one of these styles, you should only need to drag the midi over to Sonar.

Regards,
Noel

Yes the drums are polyphonic.

If the bass is playing two notes at the same time it is also polyphonic. Or if the bass plays one note and while it is sounding plays another that is polyphonic. You have to make sure that your RT is sounding only one note at a time for it to be monophonic.

I hope this helps.

sorry all seems my reply was not posted....

Okay i did play around with the bass line and it was super easy to take the guitar part and turn it into a bass midi file. just copied the audio track into a midi track now that being said i didn't try with a pattern that had chords and did do a little minor tweaking of notes, but all in all very happy with result.. ill try the drum pattern next..... the real power is you can easily create some interesting things ie turning a guitar part into a synth line... oh and melodyne editor is like 400 dollars or so no change in my pocket to purchase that anytime soon.................

reply to Noel96.... yes i am fully aware of the huge amount of midi styles, but they don't always fit an idea... some of the music i put out i have to do by hand ie sequenced via piano roll... so putting it down as an audio file with my guitar and converting it saves me a lot of time where before i would have to write note by note....

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
