Title says it. Sick of Vista questioning me or putting barriers in the way of things I want to do. In this case it's flat preventing me from doing what I want.

I had the same problem...That's why I posted on the thread: "DXi, VSTi synth alternatives"

Jeez, I hate Vista.... I just got this brand-new killer laptop with 6GB RAM / 500GB hard drive, screaming dual-core chip...and Vista. The darn thing may as well be a boat-anchor...

The GOOD news is that I have a copy of the "Release Candidate" for Windows/7 and some of the issues that I hate about Vista seem to be better. (That doesn't mean I'm thrilled... I may still go back to Win/XP-Pro... But at least it seems to be somewhat of an improvement over Vista...) Since W7 is going to hit the streets on October 22nd, I'm hoping that the XP-compatibility improvements will solve the problems.

At this point there doesn't seem to be a headlong rush by software vendors and driver-makers to deal with Vista-related problems, even though it's been around for a few years now...

If you find a solution in the interim, let me know....

I have Vista and it seems to run the Audio menu --> DXi Synth Settings --> VSC DXI just fine. Your Vista won't let you run that at all?

I can't install the thing at all, so never get that far. Popup comes up with a red "X" and says "Service stopped" and some other nonsense. UAC is turned off and I have admin privileges in the profile concerned.

Maybe I'll try it in the Administrator profile and see what happens.

Right click on the .exe file and see if it says something about admin there also

First, it blocked the install altogether. Then I tried re-running it with "Administrator" privileges. It appeared to install, but now everytime I boot it up, I get an error message: "Cannot load VSCAPI.DLL"

When I bring up BiaB/2009, I go to "Options", and in "Synthesizer/Sound Card" I choose: "SoundBlaster X-Fi Synth", and when I click on "Use VST/Dxi Synth", I get an error message: "Computer is not currently online. Try to continue displaying HTML?"

Well, it looks like the only solution is the one you pay for... I downloaded the Coyote ForteDXi, and it appears to be working. I placed an order for the purchase.

However, I notice on those styles that use MIDI drums, the drum-kit sounds all out of whack. On "B" sections suddenly the ride cymbal is WAY up and out of balance. Is there a place where you can go in and tweak the drum-kit? (Probably a dumb question, but I'm not familiar with all of the "hidden areas" of BiaB yet, and I tend to stay with the stuff that works...)

I have Vista Home 32-bit and it works fine.

I did not use XP compatibility mode when I installed and my UAC is still operation. When I installed all my BIAB programs, I simply right-clicked on the exe file and chose "Run as administrator". I don't know too much about the 64-bit Vista platform but one of the reasons I ended up getting the 32-bit version was because knowledgeable friends had told me that not all things work as they should using a 64 bit OS.

I should have stated that I was dealing with a 64-bit version... I didn't pick it...It came pre-installed on the machine. Again, I think much of the weirdness with some apps "not playing well with others" in 64-bit mode will probably work OK in Win/7. In Win/7 you will actually have a "virtual machine" version Windows/XP running the program in a window. So, if it ran on XP it should work okay in the "penalty box."

I forgot about the 64-bit thing. That's what it is. Guess I'll be looking for another DXi synth.

Bit me too. So I use the Ketron SD2 on the vista system, and the Dxi on my Acer Aspire One netbook. Wee thing runs like a top.

I don't know if this info is of any value, but there was a recent post about this problem on the Yahoo Biab users group. Below is the contents of the message.

"VSC-DXi 64-bit for Vista on a HP Pavillion dv6 notebook
does not work for me with the asio4all audio driver,
but does work with the MME audio driver."

Hope this helps.

Vista x64 prevents me from installing VSC in the first place. If someone can show me how to get past that, I'll be happy to try any driver.

Richard:

I believe that message from Yahoo UG is wrong -- this subject has been kicked around here quite a bit. Look at this thread:
http://www.pgmusic.com/ubbthreads/showfl...true#Post225177

I think the bottom line is that VSC DXi will simply NOT work on the 64-bit Vista -- that's why I bought both the Coyote and the Ketron and never looked back.

And I guess that means you an apology to poor Microsoft for the ranting... Roland is the company that hasn't seen fit to upgrade the VSC... Blame them

Blaming MS for all evils reminds me of the guy who looks for his car keys in the curb because that's where the light is... even though he lost them in the parking lot. I mean, would you really want Rob Glaser running your OS company??

Ryzard,

Unless there is a particular reason for which you need to run a 64-bit OS, you can always start from scratch and install a 32-bit OS on your system.

What my friends told me regarding Vista 64 (and what decided me to go 32-bit) was that Vista 64 won't let you use unsigned drivers easily and MS charged a fee to companies who wanted to have their drivers signed. Some companies baulked at having to pay. Vista 32, on the other hand, accepts unsigned drivers just like XP does. (I don't know how right or wrong my friends' information was but there's a lot of postings out there on the web about Vista 64 not allowing signed drivesrs.)

Regards,
Noel

When you choose to run as Windows xp. Coose run as administrator also it should install fine. Make sure you have the version or newer that biab website calls for.

Does Vista allow for bare bones starting? (F-8 on startup) Every once in awhile I've run into a software that didn't want to install in XP. So I re-booted and started up using F-8 which gives you a menu of startup options. If you start up in bare bones you can usually install them because the usual controllers aren't installed. It may let you install that way. Then re-boot into regular mode and it'll already be in there.

Just a thought. Hope it helps.

I owe Microsoft NOTHING. I just tried to "Update other products" [besides Windows, which is an interesting enough proposition with Vista. I only just figured out how to make it stop offering me IE8.]. Windows tells me it needs to open a 32-bit instance of IE, then comes back with an error. Short version: Microsoft Update won't work.

It's like with your kids. Just hit 'em on general principles. If you don't know why, they will.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
