Some really nice images in this!! I love the concept "Carolina blue" and the payoff is set up nicely with the music. I like the out front guitar. The mix works for me. Nice work!! Take care. Greg

Like the song, especially the solo part sounds very cool!
Did you play any additional lead guitar, or is it just the soloist?
Because I didn't find many slow electric guitar soloists yet.
You probably also added distortion or something?

Regards,
Rob

Thanks for commenting Greg. So many of our guests, retirees and vacation homes residents are from North Carolina and this creates a strong, friendly rivalry between fans of the University of South Carolina and the University of North Carolina. Sometimes, there's quite a debate over which is the 'real' Carolina. My family and money went to USC..... The Carolina blue is a salute to the influence in Myrtle Beach from our friends up north.

I was fortunate to stumble upon that guitar sound and solo. It has a big impact on the song in my opinion.

Thanks for listening Rob. The solo guitar, 1530 - was generated by BIAB. I did not add any effects. The distortion, reverb and delay were in the sample. I did all mixing, panning and volume levels in BIAB and exported the song to a stereo file with no further editing. I imported the stereo track into my DAW and ran the music stereo track through the DAW channel strip for overall eq and compression. There was a noticeable difference in the punch of that solo guitar relevant to the overall music track level at a lower volume level, so I gain staged the stereo track to where it was just below clipping and placed a limiter across the post of the main outputs of the DAW to prevent any accidental clips and that was it. I did not play any instruments on the music track.

Regards,

Charlie

Dani, thanks for your kind comments. I'm a big fan of yours and glad you enjoyed the song.

Regards,

Charlie

And by the way, I had not found that beach shuffle style you used on your song, Darling, so thank you also for putting me onto that style. It really fits into the Carolina beach style of music that is so popular in Myrtle Beach and along the eastern seaboard. I'll be playing around all day with it.

Charlie

Hi Charlie.

Something about this track makes me want to just keep playing it over, but I'm not sure exactly what it is! I think it's possibly the way the backing drives along with that wonderful bass line pushing it.

Nice story to the lyrics and a great vocal to match it.

Really enjoyed this one, thanks.

ROG.

ROG nailed it for me. That bass line, yup. Reminds me of my HS days and trips to Panama City or Myrtle Beach in the 1960's. Cool lyric and supporting production. Bravo!!

Hi everyone. Thanks for stopping by, listening and commenting. I appreciate it a lot. My wife, who grew up at the beach, tells me I'm "close" on the tune but not there yet and I need to find a singer and add some backup vocals because I'm "too country" and my phrasing is not right. Left to my own devices, I could hire The Temptations maybe or Floyd Jane's BIABettes if I knew how that works.

Thanks Gruverider for listening. I agree that was a pretty awesome guitar sound BIAB came up with for the song. It was pretty spot on to have been computer generated and not played live.

Love this song Charlie. Love beach music aka sixties soul pop rehashed. Good mix too. Your wife has a point it is a tad country vocal and missing the harmonies for beach but hey I've listened three times. smile

BTW, that PowerPop lead guitar is one of my fav RT's. I've used it a lot and I wish PG would get him to do some more - I like his style better than Brent on a lot of pop stuff. I'm gonna put that in the wishlist.

There's a thread on doing harmony in the tips and tricks forum where FJ talks about using BIABettes. Not hard just practice and experiment 'til you get them sounding like you want. I mix them in with my own harmony sometimes to fatten things up when I don't feel like hooking up my hardware harmonizer and don't feel like singing umpteen harmony tracks. It's a real time saver once you get the hang of using it and mixing it.

My fav of yours so far.

Josie

Hi Josie (Sundance), thanks for your kind comments and suggestions. I think the powerpop lead guitar really helped the song and I like it too. I will likely find use for it again in some other song and I'll plus 1 your wishlist post when you make it.

I found the BIAB posts you suggested and experimented with it until 3 am this morning. I had thought it required midi notes to follow and create the harmony so I had never bothered to explore it in depth earlier. I also have several hardware vocalizers I do not use often enough and Melodyne in my DAW.

I do appreciate and was encouraged that you have taken time to listen more than once. Your musical contributions here on the forum are always first quality and I particularly enjoy your song, "She's in love", that to me is beach music sounding. I go back and listen to it every so often.

Regards,

Charlie

Charlie,

Very enjoyable song. Nice mix and terrific use of the solo guitar.
The song itself has a great flow to it.

You mentioned that you did find the thread that Josie started about the harmonies - as I recall, that pretty much explain the BIABettes - but let me know if you have any questions. I use them less than I used to, but since throw them in one some things...

Enjoyed this...

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
