My studio is in the bottom of my garden - a fair way from the house (where the normal people live wink ).
My system runs win 7, my broadband connection speed is claimed to be 30mbps. I am on Wifi. After having troubles with my streaming I went out and got the best router I could find the Asus RT-AC68U and its adapter card the PCE-AC68.

I have set it all up and in functions, but I was still having trouble with the streaming. Gradually the signal seemed to degrade, at first I got both the 5 ghz signal and the 2.4 ghz signal, then I seemed to never see the 5gz (shorter rage) signal in my studio.
I was advised to turn my Virgin Superhub to modem only mode, and this seems to have helped. Both boxes were a few inches away from each other.

I do have a few close neighbours - in Windows about 4 other houses appear on the bottom rhs of the task bar.

I went into the Asus Router software and with the help of Asus tech tweaked a few things.

Going back a few months I was receiving 5 bars in the windows status bar and about 85% signal quality.

What's really confusing me is the current state of my machine, its working but How? It should not be!

1] I am receiving 20% 5 ghz and 40% 2.4gz signal

2] A internet speed test shows that I am currently getting 30 mbps ( was I ghz at times)

3] Windows is showing the icon which looks like a set of steps with a 'sun' - meaning I should be disconnected from the internet???
4] Sometimes it shows the little computer with the red cross, but the signal still works!

I thought I knew what the icons in the bottom rhs of windows meant but now I am not so sure

Can anyone explain please?

My remaining brain cell is confuzzled..

Well, that is complicated. I would:

1. Try to setup the receiving end closer to the router and see if the behaviour changes.
2. Try a different adapter card -- borrow if possible.
3. Try a different router -- borrow if possible.
4. Try a wired connection (at least CAT6) -- you probably need to buy that one.
5. Try a repeater inbetween both stations. Cheapest solution: There are those that plug into a mains socket.

1] Cant do - geography - all grass

2] Yes a different inferior UAWIFI adapter (not capable of 5ghz) works better than the superior Asus (most of the time I think)in 2.4 ghz.

3] The Superhub in WifiMode gives some sort of signal down in the studio but its weaker than the Asus

4] Wiring - may resort to this, but tis digging up concrete time

5] Tried a repeater, trouble is there is no real intermediate place to put it - ebayed it.

What's really confusing me are those icons in Windows.

I also don't really understand the way that the signal strength and the bits per second interact. I think of it like a pipe and water if the pipe is big enough, and there is no bottle neck at either end then the water flows, the 'water' is the 30mbps packets, the pipe is.... not really sure...

Home based wireless devices are very often not powerful enough to go great distances. Also, things change in the environment with time.

At times I can set on my back deck and pickup the WIFI just fine, and there are other times when I can't get a signal strong enough to read email let alone watch streaming HD video. Yesterday was such a day.

For your studio, since it appears to be a dedicated space and the need for a solid internet connection would be a vital thing to have...... my suggestion is as follows.

Use a CAT6 designed to be buried in the ground. It's easy enough to bore under sidewalks using a piece of 1/2" conduit and a water hose. In the grassy areas, be sure to place it down as deep as you can. 24" is ideal since you don't want to damage it if you plant some flowers.

OR.....if you have electricity out there to the studio (obviously you do) go and buy an internet adapter which allows you to transmit the internet over your existing power lines... up to almost 1000 feet. Search Amazon or google "internet powerline converter"

Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704165
would be the thing I would try before I did anything else.

From what I see on the prices, using the converters is cheaper than the cost of a box of wire and certainly so much quicker and less work.

Zero^2...

This is a shot in the dark... but your WIFI *is* protected with a WEP key, right? If not, it's possible that neighbours are using your WIFI and dividing the available bandwidth.

I'm always tempted to use the neighbor's wireless printer on their unprotected network .. just need to come up with something hilarious to have it spit out.
Maybe 'secure your network!!' would suffice. Then if they didn't secure it I could go ahead and print out Moby Dick...

I go the extra step and also use Network Magic to lock down my network, which gives me the added benefits of:

Seeing what devices are on my network (including OS and MAC address)
I can also take a look at their current screen to see what they're up to (desktops only).
Nobody can use my network unless I unlock it and approve the device (then lock it back down).

It can be a hassle at times, like when the daughters have friends over, but at least I know for sure who is on my network.
We also have a family website that is only viewable if you are on my network.
smile
There is other software available for this type of thing, but Network Magic came with my router.
The beauty of this type of software is that only one machine install is needed to protect the whole network. It interfaces with the router, tells it how to behave, and then you can shut down the machine with the software and the network set up stays in tact. You don't need to install it on every device. But know that the one machine in charge becomes important .. so I installed it on a couple machines just in case. It allows three installs at the same time.

Just a couple of thoughts...
Glass is NOT transparent to microwave signals - this includes both 2.4 and 5 GHz - try opening a door or window... Seriously - it's interesting how microwaves can follow surfaces around obstructions.

If the windows are open but you have fly screens, are they metalic or plastic, wet or dry?

Please do NOT use a WEP key - too easily broken, use WPA2 instead.

You might also try a pair of directional antennae - assuming you have access to external antenna connectors at both ends. Even if you only have an external connector on the router, an external antenna at one end can help - you get increased signal strength outgoind, and higher gain incoming.

thanks... I did not know this. A brief web search shows that WPA2 is not completely safe either. Look like I'll be going back to a wired-only connection

You can still add MAC layer protection too - it's a pest to manage, and MACs can be spoofed, but every little bit helps...

thanks for the input people

WAP-2 HERE.

Did some more tweaking seems tolerable just...

Guitar hacker! Fifty foot trench 2ft deep under concrete!!! errr pass....

If this does not work I shall probably try hard wire, but its going though the hedge. The powerline travels above ground, its professionally done and works well for five years now.

I'd lay it across the open ground and test it first. Then you know what effort it is worth.

I believe someone earlier suggested using the power line you mention to get the signal out there.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
