So I have a Mac, the latest Band in a Box, and a Zoom B3 multieffects, which I am using as a USB interface for my bass guitar.
I would like to record along with BiaB, preferably sending to Garageband with a track for the bass and another for the BiaB audio. I could also use Audacity, if I had to.
I have figured out that I can use the DAW plugin mode to send over the rendered track to Garageband, and then in a second take, record the bass on another track. That's nice, but I'm mostly doing this for practice, and would like to follow along with the chart. (I know I could also output to a file, drag the file into Garageband, which it seems like the DAW Drop thing is a quick way to do this.)
I tried using Soundflower and the LineIn app, like this: 1) Everything in Soundflowerbed set to "none" or "off" 2) LineIn app set with the Zoom as input, and output to Soundflower channels 3 and 4. 3) System sound output to Soundflower. System input to Zoom. 4) On the Zoom, master volume set to DAW (No monitor) 5) In Garageband, Input set to Soundflower, output to Zoom 6) Two stereo tracks, one being Soundflower 1/2 (the Mac's sound, i.e. BiaB) and the other Soundflower 3/4 (the bass)
This *almost* works. But the bass latency is horrible, and the volume on both is really low.
Is there something I'm missing? All of the stuff I have seen about recording either is for the PC, or for MIDI instruments. Does anybody have something workable? Do I need to go buy a "real" audio interface? Or should I give up and go buy a portastudio or audio recorder and just dump the computer and the bass to that?
Thanks, Jon

I would try recording the bass audio to the Band in a Box audio track. That way you can have full control over the Biab generated tracks and be able to view the notation or chord chart.
You might want to try different audio input settings such as MME versus ASIO, increase or decrease your latency settings, different input volumes, change the tone control, etc. to find what settings work best.
Bass can be a little difficult to record because you may have to modify your playing technique. You want to provide a consistent volume level to your interface instead of a thump. Many people add some compression to the audio input as an insert to even out the volume level.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the quick reply on this.
This might be a Mac thing (or just me) but the Mac version doesn't have any obvious recording button. There is a MIDI record button, but no audio recording. Maybe this is a PC only feature? If BiaB itself handled the recording, that would be fine by me, and I'd skip the Garageband part, but I can't seem to find any way to do this in the UI.
Understood about the playing style stuff. I'd probably put a compressor/limiter in the B3 setup to take care of that part.
Anybody with a Mac doing recording like this?

Also, make sure that the Zoom is set as your audio interface in the Apple OS system priorities, wherever that is.
I have a Zoom G5 (big brother for Guitar of the B3 for bass) and we have a B3 at Church.
I do not have a Mac. However, in order to record on PC with my G5, I have to one of a couple of things:
Option A: Set the G5 as the recording interface, which I don't like to do, because then I have to connect the line outs to my monitors - which I have connected to my Focusrite Scarlett audio interface at present.
Option B: I set the L/R line outs from the G5 into a couple of L/R inputs on the Focusrite, and then just use the Focusrite as the interface - this is my preferred methodology.
Now, as to whether there's a record method in the Mac version, that I simply have no idea about. But if you want to trade info on the Zoom bass/guitar processors as interfaces, I do have experience with that on the PC platform. They are an incredible value.

Jon,
There is no audio track in BIAB for Mac. Dragging your project to Garageband or other DAW is your best bet.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
