I am working on a project that involves writing music for Christian church worship services that reflects a liberal, progressive theology. Working in partnership with author Brian McLaren, I am creating musically the ideas that Brian writes about in his books. (http://www.brianmclaren.net). This is a song that reflects the theology in a particular chapter in one of his books.

Produced with BIAB Style is _DIRE_FS.STY adding a couple of acoustic guitar tracks. DAW used is GarageBand. This is a draft version of the song - please give me some critical feedback which I can use as I work toward a final mix (if progressive Christian music isn't your thing, please give me feedback on the music and mix anyway - I don't wish to debate the theology, just get feedback on the music composition, and the mix). Thanks everyone!

Another nice song! You are doing some nice stuff here. Some of the parts of the songs get a little pitchy with the vocals and there's occasional awkward phrasing but I hear some really good stuff! Continue sharing the material, and as Bud said, Welcome to the forum! Take care. Greg

Hi Joe,

This is another pretty song but I didn't listen to all of it because I was so distracted by the bass being panned right. For a song this style the rhythm section drums and bass should be panned center.

Also, I'm only trying to be helpful here by offering you a friendly suggestion - you'll get more response if you post one song at a time - get some feedback on it - share some feedback on some other people's songs you have the time to listen to - and then post another one of yours. There are a lot of songs posted here every week and none of us have unlimited listening time. We all have busy lives and music projects we're working on too. smile

Hi Joe. This is a good song and I like your drum selection for this song better than what you used on Where Is Love. I agree with Josie regarding the panning and with Greg about the vocal pitch issue. This particular song sounds better to me as an acoustic arrangement suggesting a piano rather than the distorted guitar.

I like this song much better than the other one you posted.

I would not call either "progressive" .... nope, more like country christian with a slight rock bent.

David Crowder and artists like that are on the cutting edge.

ON the mix. Keep the bass, drums, and lead vocal straight up the center as well as things that are soloing. pan harmony vox and other things but keep them balanced. you don't want one side of the mix heavier than the other.

Thanks - really appreciated the feedback on this, since I am absolutely new to BIAB and mixing.

The reference to "progressive" actually refers to the theology in the lyrics, not the music. A bit confusing here I admit. But the lyrics to the songs I write a) are inclusive in language b) do not subscribe to a "substitutional atonement" theology (ie. Jesus died for my sins) c) focus on living faithfully in this world, not simply escaping to the next. Those lyrical parameters are essentially what makes them "progressive." I agree, the music is certainly not progressive.

Appreciate the comments a bunch! Thanks.

Hi Joe,

This is a really nice song.
We do agree with the things said above about the panning and.... we
like harmonies and think the choruses would sound just a bit more interesting with some extra vocals.
Welcome to the forum

Nicely done, love the drum sound you acheived on this cymbals sound crisp but not sharp, great work; thanks for sharing!

Joe - you've gotten some good advice on mixing this one. The acoustic guitar work here is nice. As others have said, some harmonies on the chorus would be a good addition. - floyd

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
