Hello,
Is anyone aware of a way or post explaining how to go about creating a style that will simply play piano chords in root position, probably held until the next chord.
The idea being, since I have a bunch of BIAB charts already. I am looking for a way to have BIAB act like a piano player, pushing midi out to another sequencer I have to take advantage of some of the alternate styles available on it. I suppose the other alternative is to for me to learn piano and use a real keyboard, but BIAB makes less mistakes that I would at this point and the keyboard records the performance in realtime to wav. I did try creating a style taking held chords from the SWHELD44 style, but somehow my playback keeps inverting chords etc. even if I set the Song preferences to play only root position. I'm learning along the way, just not there yet! Thanks for any tips pointing me in the right direction.

Hi Patrick,

There are two such styles. One is a swing beat and the other is an even beat. They are ...

  • SW44HELD.STY
  • HELDBOSA.STY

Regards,
Noel

Those two utility styles were created by PG Music as a result of user request (mine). As a composer, I wanted to hear block chords to check them. There is another way to do it now, though, called Output Chords, and this was designed to trigger external devices. I will look up the setting to do this as soon as I get to my computer.

Even the held styles are not all root position, even though they are just triads. All root position chords in a song would sound very awkward and more like an exercise. Ray

Go to "Preferences", "OutputCH."

The Output Chords options are actually pretty powerful. They include triads in root position, sevenths, or more complex chords.

Oh, and Ray is right.

I got the output chord function to generate chords that is good. I can see them in the midi monitor. Now I just need to get my Roland bk-7mto except the notes as I intend. It has other ideas of its own.. I'm halfway there though. Thanks for all the help. Reading the manual. smile

Edited Update: Somehow after hooking Roland up via USB instead of MIDI cables and adjusting/experimenting with some settings on the Roland Unit I got them talking to each other so my BIAB can trigger the Roland's arranger function. Thanks again for the OUTPUT CHORD trick. That was key. Not totally sure if I can repeat it after I shut the Roland down, but I took notes.

Ray, the "arranger" on the Roland is fed the chords in root position and it does predetermined variations. With them in root position, it can "recognize them" properly. They don't sound, they just trigger the arranger. I am using this to create/record to MP3 some backing tracks utilizing my BIAB's chords feeding the Roland's Arranger. Mainly for some dance type numbers/medleys and to take advantage of the Roland canned intro's and ending. And yes, they did sound awkward until I found out how to mute them! Thanks.

Thanks Noel. I did look those over and that helped me understand mixing sytles and just taking parts of styles to create new ones, so it was worthwhile the go in that direction for a bit. I appreciate it.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
