Can anyone let me know why I'm not seeing the follow along cursor when I play back my tracks on BIAB 2014? I've looked everywhere to see if there is something that turns that feature on and off, with no luck. Did something change with one of the updates that I'm not aware of? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "follow along cursor". Are you referring to Chord Sheet View, Notation Mode, Piano Roll Mode or Lead Sheet View? All of these a process follows what's playing.

If you are meaning Chord Sheet View, are you referring to the fact that the bar that's currently playing has a black background (like the image below) and this black background moves along with the song?

Regards,
Noel

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. I don't see that moving cursor through the arrangement at all, and it is happening on all the different views.

Passion4Blue,

The first thing I try when BIAB does not behave properly is to reset to the factory settings. This is found under the "Opt" menu.

I suggest using the top option (marked in the above image) as this will keep your midi/audio drivers set-up intact.

Regards,
Noel

Yeah, I tried that Noel and I even reloaded BIAB 2014 from scratch and I still can't get any of the visual playback features to come up. In other words, I went into Piano and Guitar View as well as Notation or the Chord views and even with the music playing there is no visual activity going on with BIAB. I've reached out to the Online help and they also told me to do the Factory reset. Geez, I may have to revert to an old version of BIAB if I can't get this working. Thanks for your help though.

Not at a computer now, but a wild guess: did you change the default color scheme?

Passion4Blue,

If you loaded an old songfile, it might something to do with that.

Do double-check that this is truly not behaving as properly try the following as a test.

1. Close the program down and restart it.

2. Do not load any song file or midi file.

3. BIAB will show a "C" chord in bar 1 by default

4. Without doing anything else, generate the song (which will be entirely based on the C chord in bar 1).

Let's know how it goes.

Regards,
Noel

Matt,
I'm curious about the color scheme? I don't believe I've changed it, but was wondering about that earlier. Not sure how I would have done that, but the thing is, would that also affect the fact that I'm not getting any notes playing on the Piano or Guitar Views as well as the Chord and Notation screens? Nothing, but the music plays on and I can input chords and all that measure by measure. Just not getting any visual playback of any sort. Weird...

Passion4Blue,

Check to see if there is a new video driver for your video card. I've noticed from my time in these forums that when strange things happen display-wise it is sometimes an indication that the video driver needs updating.

Also, are you running two monitors? That can cause unusual behaviour, too.

Regards,
Noel

Just a thought, when I loaded BIAB onto Win 7, I couldn't read the top bar along the Menu. I had to change Win 7 color theme to another color.
Food for thought.

I second the idea about video driver OR Windows video display mode and/or resolution. If your BIAB cursor appeared earlier and now does not, AND you have reset to factory defaults, the video driver/mode/resolution would be the next places I would look at. BTW, are there any other programs that show unusual display characteristics? For example, does RealBand look and perform per SOP?

Not sure why my earlier post is missing?
When I installed BIAB in Win 7, I wasn't able to read the top line (above the menus). Support suggested I change Win 7 Color theme, when I did, my problem was solved.
Hope this post sticks around.
Cheers.

Ah, so the wild guess wasn't so wild.

For reference, for others, can you post the solution - the steps to make the change? Maybe do it in the Tips and Tricks Forum?

Noel and Matt, thank you both for your suggestions! I reached out to the Band in a Box Support group and this is what they suggested:

Please close Band-in-a-Box and go into your bb folder (usually c:\bb).
Search for and delete the following two files: Mysetup.dk and interface.bbw
Once that is done, right click on the Band-in-a-Box icon and select "run this program as the administrator" to launch Band-in-a-Box.

This resolved the issue! I am once again a happy man! smile

Take care and thanks once again!

Eddie

Hi Eddie,

Thank you for passing that on. Deleting those two files is the mega-ultimate factory reset. It's a great solution to keep in mind.

Sometimes when BIAB doesn't behave properly and factory reset doesn't work, moving those files out of the \BB folder will solve the problem. I usually suggest simply renaming them to something like <filename>.old. From BIAB's perspective, that's equivalent to deleting them because BIAB no longer sees them.

When those two files aren't in the \BB folder, BIAB is forced to create two new ones. All settings are lost when this happens but it's usually straightforward to set up midi/audio again.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. Now that everything is working, I suggest that you go to the "Opt" menu and select "Save preferences as" to save your current set up. Then, if things go wrong in the future, reloading this saved set up may well save you time and angst.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
