Small Town Saturday Night

Johnny's got the chevy billy's got the truck

Cruise to the drive in gonna try our luck

roll on down to the edge of town

The edge of our world then turn around

homemade wine and a case of beer

time to let loose the weekends here

Springsteens jumpin off an old cassette

but there's just one thing that I don't quite get

Are you gonna leave her or love her

You're doggin every girl in sight

Are you gonna leave her or love her

on this small town saturday night

Out to the farm on the Anderson place

Drivin like a demon in a dirt car race

Stand by the fire maybe steal a kiss

It's the only thing to do on a night like this

we laughed so hard I guess it dont take much

actin real cool when the girls show up

Here comes Jody with her little sister

She's your girl but you hardly missed her

A delightfully fun rocker, dabbled with just the right amount of depth and substance!! Some very cool images (Springsteen, casette, the edge of town/our world). When the lyrics were nearly sung, I said to myself "Tommy, you gotta give us a solo" and there it was-beautifully done as always! Love the tune all around! Take care. Greg

I took your advice and turned it up! It plays well at a higher volume... (Ah tapped mah feet and EVAHthang!)

1) I liked the rhyme between SISTER and MISSED HER

2) at the end I liked the way you synched the drum hits with the overdriven guitar chords... (how did you create that drum part?)

3) I notice your intro works as a recurring riff that could be a signature passage

4) One of the things I have trouble with is deciding how to deviate the pattern in the middle without having it sound like the same chords in a different order. But this changeup sounded great! It was quite a bit different than the rest of the song, but it didn't sound contrived at all. In my experience, its not easy to find that happy medium.

5) I also liked the passages where you broke up the heavy beat with something a bit lighter . Whether you intended it or not, it provides a break from the adrenaline and keeps the song from wearying the senses.

6) and in spite of the fact that the song has a down & dirty aspect to it, it poses a fairly responsible question to the people living out the song. I kinda wasn't expecting that, but I liked it.

7) in fact, after reading your lyrics on the computer screen, I'd have to say they really "kick ASCII"

8) oh, and Janice wasn't in this project, so you're gonna get inundated by the whole enchilada of praise without having any of it redirected to the mountains of Georgia! wink (and you deserve every.single.bit.of.it!)

Wow Tommy! This is one great sounding git down and boogie rocker and I just love that little hesitation with the big strum (sorry, I don't what to call it) that the guitar does behind the main rhythm guitars - it really adds that little extra shake it baby oomph to the beat. And then the leads are just fantastic. Vocal - mix - on the money. I'll confess when I saw the title I thought is he doing a cover because the country song of the same name came into my head but once your song started I forgot all about that.

Love it.

Tommyad and turn up the volume are nearly synonymous. See a new song from you and you know the house/car will be rockin'.

Enjoyed the listen and particularly the twelve strings. Your hard work and attention to detail always shows in your music.

Tom,

Super rocker! A little AC/DC, a little Cream, a little Byrds... all mixed together like it's no big deal... "I got this" he says...

I especially liked the closing leads.

Your mixes are always top-notch. This is no exception. Crisp and clear and Rockin'. Once again, it sounds like a band who have been together a long time, getting in the studio and doing it right...

A very catchy chorus! I did, however, want to hear more voices backing you up there...

Oh... and you are the King Of Loud. BIG, BIG sound..

Hi Tom,

Yes, this sounds great!
Really has that 80s hardrock sound, some Springsteen influences too.
The breaks are very natural.
Sounds natural, as if it wasn't made with BIAB, which is meant as a great compliment here :-)

Regards,
Rob

Greg, Thanks for your comments. More than not you will get a solo in one of my tunes-can't help myself. Thanks again, Tom

Pat, Man I sure am glad you are back around. Your observations are always interesting. 1)Thanks, 2)Biab did that- but I pushed the chords. 3) I thought about using it at the beginning of the 2nd verse-but it sounded better to just chunk it out. 4)floyd guesses right I was looking for a Byrds sound- I also wanted the feel of a small town fair. 5) Blind luck 6) The moral of the story is? 7)Thanks 8) I never mind sharing credit and Janice deserves every bit. Thanks again for the detailed response. Tom

Hi Tom ...

First, loved that hanging guitar feedback at the end! This reminded me of something the Birds might have done closer to the end of their heyday.

Your lyrics caught the aura of several of the small towns I grew up in. You took me back to the late fifties and mid sixties with your skillfully crafted words. Yep, I'm that old (68) and can remember all the way back to 1951.

Your guitar sound a little like Clapton in his days with Creme. All in all, this sounded like Tom Adams getting his act together in a big way.

Loved the drive with the couple of respites along the way...a nice balance for the listener.

Sweet!

To steal a line from Mellencamp.... R O C K In The USA!!
Man oh man, does this thing rock. It's got that
good vibe that makes me wish Janice and I still had
our Stingray so we could ride through the country
side listening...but nowadays its a Subaru and that
doesn't seem to fit the bill smile

No angst ridden mush, no headbangin' noise here, just a
sound that makes you happy and ready to cruise
with the top down.

Yes, a great lyric, vocal, guitar, production and all that
stuff too but when the total package delivers like this
it's hard to focus on the details.

Yeah, we like it.

Thanks Josie, That little extra oomph is the pushes on the chords. Hal Ketchum sang a song with the same title. I figured one of the co-writers Hank DeVito would cut me a break seeing as though he and I are steel players. Thanks again for the kind words. Tom

floyd, I was definitely thinking Byrds in the middle part. And the creamy distortion on the leads is all Cream. And I can see where you get the AC/DC thing from, but I was thinking more along the lines of Eric Church believe it or not. Many times I thought I should redo the closing lead, but now that a couple of people seemed to like it, I'm glad I left it in. Thanks, Tom

Rob, Thanks for your generous comments. I think we are all striving to make these real tracks sound even more real, whether it be EQ shaping, processing, or fine line editing. Some of the transitions from measure to measure don't always sound natural and if the above doesn't work it's time to find an alternative track. Biab is an unbelievable piece of software that bridges the gap between art and technology beautifully, but it is up to us to find the full potential that is there. Thanks again, Tom

Hey Tommy,

You're guitar and voice are the reason that I won't go anywhere near this kind of music. I'm listening to your solo as I type - you got the fangs on that baby good and sharp. Good changes, lyrics too.
