Hi
I've just DL'd an SGU file and on playing it I see that the first chord is Gmaj7(P4). I
It "sounds" just like a regular maj7 - so what is it and what is its purpose please.
Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian,

It sounds like the SGU file's creator has used what music theorists call pedal point. What the (P4) is indicating is that you have a bass note set for 4 bars.

This is accomplished by right-clicking on the chord sheet and selecting "Chord Settings" from the pop-up menu (ALT+F5 is the shortcut).

Here's an example.

You can see that bar 1 has C/E(P4).

Opening the "Chord settings" dialogue shows that the bass note for the chord has been set to E (#2) and that it lasts for 4 bars (#3). This note E is set to be played on beats 2 & 4 (#4). Because of this setting, whatever chords I put in the first 4 bars, the bass will always play 'E' (even if "/bass note" is not used).

If you want to clear these, simply click on the "Clear all bars" button (#5).

Pedal point is an excellent way of creating musical tension.

Hope this helps,
Noel

P.S. In my recent song "Fly, Angel, Fly" presently in the User Showcase forum, I use this pedal point setting in exiting the bridge and entering the chorus. I have the bass line playing on E for the last two bars of the bridge while the chords change (2 per bar) "E A | Bm E9sus". Because my pedal point is only 2 bars long, I have (P2) on my BIAB chord sheet.

Thank you, Noel for this full and detailed explanation.
Now relistening to the SGU I can hear that the Bass is doing something different there to the normal Style.
I shall keep this "trick" in mind for the future.
My apologies for not having reviewed any Showcase tunes recently - its been so hectic that I'm only just looking at laying down a new tune that has been wandering about my brain a while.
Cheers
Ian
PS - our son and family, now in Sydney since February are looking forward to their first "hot" Christmas.

Glad to help out Ian.

There's no need for you to listen to my song. I mentioned it just in case you were interested in hearing the effect used.

I've never known a cold Christmas! Well, not in the sense of snow, frost, etc. There have been a few Christmases where I've had to grab a jumper and put it on!

I hope your son and his family enjoy the experience.

All the best,
Noel

They are, Noel, thanks.
They have been made to feel welcome, "integrated" well (what a catch-all word) and have a nice home now in Penrith NSW.
They are there, not for the "experience" as it were, but to make their Life there and contribute to the growth and well-being of their new Country - he's in a medically related Profession.
We shall visit in early 2016.
Ian

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
