...or even your own personal lists that you use at gigs.

It's understood there will be different lists for different age groups, venues, and styles. So you may want to preface your list with this info:

Age Group:
Venue:
Style:

And don't forget those songs that have no rightful place on that list, but that you love playing so much, you 'slip them in anyway'.

Lastly - share which songs have gotten the warmest reception and moved your audience based on their willingness to sing along (anthems), get up and dance (dance music), or given you the urge to end the song early and move on.

Hey 90db (checked your Profile - no name),

I like a lot of the songs on your list (may come to your next NYC gig !), many I've heard and are songs I would continue listening to if they came on the radio. Some I don't recognize, but bet I've heard before and like, just don't know them by title, and others might be new undiscovered 'to become' favorites of mine. I find that people that play an instrument (not musicians, mind you ha ha ha) often like to hear more interesting harmonies and melodies than those that don't. This is also great 'discovery' post for me.

The Steely Dan song "Do it Again" is one of my favorites for musicianship and instrument mastery. (and I use the term per Eddie's definition" lol - ok, going to let that go after this one final reference). I'm just curious to know if you go after these solos pretty close to the original, or completely improvise over them.

Some yes, some no. Signature solos (i.e. "Black Magic Woman"), are verbatim. People expect that.

A lot of the others have miles of room for improv.

Bob

Would anybody have a list for people that are 'old timers' today - e.g. the current set of nursing home residents ?

Sweet song list 90db. I can tell just from the list I'd have a smile on my face after listening to a set.

One surprise on there, "Everybody's Talking by Nillson". Great song. I've always heard the recording but never heard it performed.

We've played "Everybody's Talkin" for ages. It goes off the list occasionally, but it always sneaks back on. shocked

Joe,

especially among boomers, "favorite" music is tied closely to year of graduation. There are lists of top 100 songs for every year going wayy back farther that you need to. If you want to target an age group, go to one of these lists and pick the top 10 songs for 5 consecutive years.

Getting it "right" is probably more of an issue where people are free to come and go. People in homes are a captive audience.

Bob,

in your experience, which of those songs fill the dance floor consistently?

I'm not looking for the top one, I'm more interested in knowing ALL of the floor fillers...

I covered Gordon Lightfoot's "Steel Rail Blues" at more wedding receptions than I care to remember, even several in Port Coquitlum, BC. (sp?) It never failed to fill the dance-floor and prompt encore requests.

That was at the peak of Gord's success, especially in Canada, doubly so.

Another that got feet moving was Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue". A fabulous drummer from Vancouver, BC would sit in and play that marvelous drum solo. We'd play it just before a break and we'd all walk off the riser and leave him flailing the skins. He also absolutely owned "Wipe Out!"

Hard to tell, really. Uptempo is usually good, but people like to slow dance as well. If they're drunk enough, they'll dance to anything! grin

here's a list of everything I have in the pipeline. By that I mean I'd like to be able to pull it out of the hat if requested, and I have a project started, but not necessarily finished.

"Finished" would mean I have the backing track finished, MIDI codes embedded in the sequence to control my gear in real time, chords extracted and tempo mapped, I can play it and sing it and I know whatever solos may be required. If transposing was required in order to sing it, then "finished" means its been transposed, practiced and ready to perform. Finished also means that songs will be about the same volume when played back to back.

I have backing tracks ready for about 90% of these, but I only have about 15 of them practiced enough to call "finished". I'm finally at the point of being able to select about 50 of them and start practicing them every day

And no, I don't plan on depending on memory... chords are embedded in the lyric sheets (comments), which will display automatically as each song loads up in real band.

Song list is in an Excel spreadsheet, where it can be sorted by title, artist, genre, year for preparing specialty set lists for a certain age group (sort by year) or a certain taste (sort by genre) or if I want to do a mini tribute I could sort by artist.

Pat, you do Hotel California yet make self deprecating comments about your guitar work? If you are doing that song well with both the Felder and Walsh parts, I bow at your feet in deference to the guitar work. I played that song in a band with 2 guitars (I was Walsh), plus a 12 string playing rhythm, and it was INTENSE!!! Those dual guitar harmony lines at the end.... Crowd cheered wildly after that one.

Also, Landslide is by Dixie Chicks? And I Thank You by ZZ Top? I didn't know they ever covered that. There are several like that where you named the covering artist rather than the original. Just pulling your chain.

That's quite an impressive list. That has to be several thousands of hours preparing those tracks. Quite impressive. You must have some kind of vocal range to do those harmonies in the Eagles songs! And the Cetera stuff.....

Now I GOTTA drive down and see you!

I smashed the hell out of my car today. When the cops came I told him "Officer, that guy was BOTH texting and drinking a beer." The cop said "Sir, he has every right to do that. I mean, it's HIS living room..."

Pat Marr - you know you are my soul brother from across the country. I am at a very similar point to you in that I loooooooove music, but can fluently play far less of it than I "plan to" at the current moment, and for someone (myself, that is), I spend far more time thinking, tinkering, figuring out and then forgetting snippets of so many things without the discipline to actually practice them to the point of "internal musical and muscle memory", so to speak. And you convinced me that this is the nature of my personality - to stop beating myself up for this personality trait. And I have - I just keep doing what I'm doing, very gradually approaching my stated goals.

All that said - I feel like this can be a great starting point for jamming with each other over the Internet - surely the technology must be pretty close to allowing this, and once the technology is there, the next big hurdle is picking and knowing the same common set of songs. Well that common set of songs of interest is gradually being shared on this website. When I want to jam with someone, the first step is always finding some songs we both know. "Professional" PLAYERS (not musicians, ha ha - couldn't resist though I know I promised to stop - I lied ha ha) usually have enough experience that they can easily find these 'common standards', but for part-time students and dapplers like myself, finding those common songs to jam on is always a chore.

Pat,

That's an impressive list. I was curious - what do you plan to use for PA? Mixer/amps/monitors/mics, etc.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."

There are other places you can listen to these songs too! Visit our User Showcase page to sort by genre, artist (forum name), song title, and date - each listing will direct you to the forum post for that song.

If you'd rather listen to these songs in one place, head to our Band-in-a-Box® Radio, where you'll have the option to select the genre playlist for your listening pleasure. This page has SoundCloud built in, so it won't redirect you. We've also added the link to the Artists SoundCloud page here, and a link to their forum post.

We hope you find some inspiration from this amazing collection of User Showcase Songs!

We've enhanced the Melodists feature included in Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows!

Access the Melodist feature by pressing F7 in the program to open the new MultiPicker Library and locate the [Melodist] tab.

You can now generate a melody on any track in the program - very handy! Plus, you select how much of the melody you want generated - specify a range, or apply it to the whole track.
