This week song: All I want A love song I wrote for Anne-Marie's birthday. Although her birthday was last year, I finally came up with the song this year (Wiser Woman, one of our previous songs, was also written for her birthday, two years ago). Anyway, now it's her turn to write me one because my birthday will be next week The song features the very nice Joni Mitchell style. I immediately liked the piano playing and started to experiment with some chords. For MIDI tracks we usually use the Forte DXI but this time I needed a piano that would sound a little bit sharper, so I decided to use the Musyng Kite light soundfont along with the BassMidi SF2 soundfont loader. Finally I rendered the MIDI tracks with the program SynthFont. Further specifics: Style is P_JONI.STY (Joni Mitchel piano) MIDI Instruments: Acoustic Piano (1), Acoustic Piano (2), Synth Strings 1 (51), Standard MIDI drums 2478:Bass, Acoustic, Held Ev 110 1175:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm PopCalypso Ev 100 1680:Guitar, 12-String Acoustic, Fingerpicking Ev 085 Soloist: 2448 Electric Background PopDreamyBrent Ev085 (is there any other? ) Hope you like it! Any comments are welcome. Regards, Rob Lyrics: All I want
All I really want. All I really need is your caring When you reach for me, when you say that all is fine
And though there's less that I fear, still more than enough to worry That's when you tell me that, that's when you say to just let it go
Some days we're miles away, never close enough We keep the days within our minds. They're never very far
What I never knew, is what I've come to find in your presence Learn to feel at ease with myself. Letting days go by
And much sooner than I thought, those restless days seem to vanish I'm getting closer now to ourselves, to who I could be
Some days we're out of reach. The longing's building up We keep the days within our hearts. They're never far apart
All I ever want. All I ever need is your loving When you tell me that, when you say that you're doing fine
There is so much more to see, so much more to learn when we want to When I reach for you, when I say that I'm doing fine
At times we're miles away. Never close enough We keep the days within our minds We're never far apart

Nice tune, pleasant lyrics, and very nice vocal delivery.
The slow build really helped to introduce anticipation and presence.
Good overall balance

beautiful. Anne Marie should be proud of this song for her, beautiful.
The soloist fitted perfectly.
The minimal video really suited the song.
Happy birthday next week, Rob!!

Wow! Lots of thoughts on this one... 1) A love song I wrote for Anne-Marie's birthday. As awesome as these words of love may be (and they are very compelling) the REAL love song is your life together. The words only describe what already is. 2) Although her birthday was last year, I finally came up with the song this year grin she doesn't have a birthday this year too? 3) For MIDI tracks we usually use the Forte DXI but this time I needed a piano that would sound a little bit sharper, so I decided to use the Musyng Kite light soundfont along with the BassMidi SF2 soundfont loader. Finally I rendered the MIDI tracks with the program SynthFont. that worked out very well! The piano is perfect for the tune! 4) I really liked the guitar decoration in the middle. Sometimes such passages don't work in the context of the song, but this one was spot-on! 5) I always enjoy your chord progressions.. they are never cookie cutter duplications of a hundred other songs, and they always perfectly match the mood of the song! 6) Harmony is very good... I don't see any mention in your introductory details... did you get Anne-Marie to sing on her own birthday present?? 7) I thought the lyrics were very touching... expressions of exactly the sort of thought process that we all go through when we stop thinking of ourselves as one, and progress to the realization that a couple can be understood as a singular entity. Your choice of words here is a good example of that: I'm (singular) getting closer now to ourselves (plural), to who I (singular)could be
8) this line is the clincher: when you find somebody who enables your understanding and makes life more alive and comfortable than it once was... that's what puts the love in the love song! What I never knew, is what I've come to find in your presence Learn to feel at ease with myself. Letting days go by 9) Rob, every single time I hear one of your songs I am surprised all over again by the quality of your voice! You were born to sing and write songs! You've found your niche! In summary, I think this is a beautiful song by any standard... but as a love song it sparkles like a diamond! If these words are a true indication of your feelings, It sounds like the two of you were destined to be together! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

The build, the progression, the lyric, the melody and the typical great vocal and mix all add up to one heckuva birthday present. And it is a perfect fit for the J&B marriage also.
Thanks!

Anne Marie is very lucky.
Then, of course, there is the school of thought that says "lucky is the man that has a woman who inspires him to write love songs"

Wow! I really think this is a great song! It seems like it could be a Dan Fogelberg song to me. I really like the feel and execution of it.
Thanks for sharing it! Great story too!

User Tip: How to add drum fills without changing any other tracks
MarioD has shared some great advice when it comes to adding drum fills without changing any other tracks in your song:
There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This is especially important if one is holding a chord for a few measures and wants to add a drum fill prior to the next chord. The following is how to accomplish that:
1-get the instruments/tracks to play like you want but don't worry about the drums for now.
2-generate the song.
3-freeze all tracks
4-unfreeze the drum track
5-add your fills where you want them
6-generated the song again - note this will only generate the drum track and not the frozen tracks
7- when you get the drums like you want them freeze the track

Review - Band-in-a-Box® 2023 for Windows is Overflowing with Features!
Dennis posted his very thorough Band-in-a-Box® review recently, where he dives into some of the new features added with version 2023: Sound-Guy's Band-in-a-Box Review
Read his thoughts on the Download & Install Manager, partial track regeneration, Playable RealTracks, Audio Editing, the addition of SynthMaster, the VST DAW Plugin, and more!
"Band-in-a-Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is, without negative connotation, a monster of a program. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. No DAW can do some of the things BIAB does, while BIAB can do a lot that DAWs do."
