I Don’t Wanna Slip Away
© 2015 K Leverett

She waited for me to come home from war
From three different tours in a desert land
She gave me time to clear my head
And patiently made wedding plans

But I came back as someone else
Not sure I even know myself
Scared to death, maybe in need of help

So baby wrap your arms around me and kiss goodnight
And if I dream of unfinished work tonight
I just wanna wake up in the light of day
I don’t wanna slip away
Baby I don’t wanna slip away
Wanna wake up in the light of day
I don’t wanna slip away
I don’t wanna slip away

Dug in like rats we held our ground
And waited for the end
An unspoken pact had each others backs
Time and time again
Now I can’t let go of their hands
That’s some of my blood there with them in the sand
You tell me what was gained
Cause they’ll never be whole or home again

So baby wrap your arms around me and kiss goodnight
And if I dream of unfinished work tonight
I just wanna wake up in the light of day
I don’t wanna slip away
Baby I don’t wanna slip away
Wanna wake up in the light of day
I don’t wanna slip away
I don’t wanna slip away

Wow, Kenny.

That is STRONG. In all regards.

The writing is so far above what people typically do for a song of this type. If you weren't "actually there", you did one heck of a job portraying it. Superb writing.

The melody suits the lyric perfectly. (The chorus is dripping Springsteen).
The juxtaposition of gritty story telling in the verses with a melodic (catchy) "singable" chorus is not a run-of-the-mill songwriter...nice...this is "convincing" songwriting.

The arrangement and production are excellent. Your vocal is stunning.

Impressed.

Kenny ...

Agree with all that everyone else has said. I served a year and a half in Vietnam ... 1966-1967. The transition back home wasn't easy. I always feared not making the adjustment. My brother still has issues with it. Fortunately, things eventually worked out fine for me. I was with the 4th Infantry Division. Went on to spend 23 years in the Army.

But you words speak what so many veterans of war would say if they could. Powerful and stunning performance. Standing "O" for you!

One small suggestion ... bring the fiddle track up just a bit.

Great job!

Wonderful job with this!! It has a great feel, a lot of emotion, the ring of truth, and the arrangement carries the song perfectly. Fiddle and mandolin really add to the sad, somber feel. A treat through and through!! Take care. Greg

I'm giving you a standing ovation and two big thumbs up!

First of all, thank you for your service. Thanks for your kind words and yes I was usuing the fiddle as background and lead, it should've been brought up in the mix a little where it became a lead instrument.

Thank you so much, just from what I know I'm already a fan of yours, your songs, arrangements, singing all ring very true with me. I was on the fence with this song as to whether anyone should ever hear it or not. Springsteen is very much in my makeup, thanks again for such kind words.

I gave it a listen.

Some valid imagery of a very specific and personal subject matter.
Effective emotional vocal and sincerely delivered.

Carry on....

Wow! That is quite possibly the best write I've ever heard
about that subject. It just rings with authenticity. The perfect
touch of sadness without being maudlin. We are really
glad you decided to share it and the productions is right
in the pocket.

Beautifully written. Nice production. And love your vocals too. Personally, I like the fiddle in the verses and not so much all through the chorus - jmho.

Great song.

Thanks for the kind words, and the comment on the fiddle in the chorus is right on the mark. I hadn't noticed the little clashing parts, very good advice and good ear, thank you very much.
