"Peter's Lament" (instrumental)
3 of 7 - Tangled Roots Project

This is the third track of my Tangled Roots project. Some time ago while talking with my friend Peter, a SF Bay area guitarist and musician of note, I found myself feeling very feeling empathetic to his sense of genuine sadness about how screwed up the world is, or at least many aspects of it. This feeling has stuck with me, and every now and then feels overwhelming. This track is for him, as a reflection on his thoughts, and it’s called “Peter’s Lament”. It's a (mostly) acoustic piece based around steel, resonator, mandolin, violin, and guitars.

Resonator Guitar: 377: Guitar, Resonator, Background Trav Ev 088 (Wanda Vick)
Violin: 600: Fiddle, Background Train Ev 130 (Wanda Vick)
Acoustic Guitar: 528: Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking Hank Sw 120 (Jason Roller)
Electric Guitar: 422: Guitar, Electric, Soloist Blues Sw 120 (Jack Pearson)
Steel Guitar: 370: Pedal Steel, Background Hank Sw 120 (Steve Hinson)
Mandolin: 436: Mandolin, Soloist Bluegrass Ev 130 (Andy Leftwich)
Acoustic Bass: 397: Bass, Acoustic, Jazz Paul Sw 140 (Jodi Proznick)
Drums: JazzBrushes (Craig Scott)
Composition & Arrangement: MW Gilbert

Background of the Tangled Roots Project: I grew up listening to all kinds of American music, jazz, blues, rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B. When I started composing my own music, even though these many wonderful influences were shaping my compositions, I never worked directly in these idioms. Since my own music is a coming together of many tangled roots, I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and try to write pieces that went back to this rich pool of musical influences. This is very good. Your choice of instruments is spot on and your mix is also.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Enjoyed the song. It reminded me a little of something Arlo would have written.

Thanks VideoTrack. I take the Arlo reference as high praise; he lives not too far from here in Massachusetts, too. His son Abe (now part of his band) used to hang around Brookfield Farm studios back in the day - I used to see him and his friends while I was there mixing my 5th album for CD. More than a few years ago...

Thanks to boehm and PgFantastic for listening and the kind comments as well!
