Hi,

I sort of have BB under control to create something new starting with BB.

I went back and took a look at things I have created live and with other software to see if I could use BB to embellish or add solos.

I have no idea how to even start!!

This is the start of a song I did some time back, a rough draft to let the other musicians get the idea. We did a live version at the House Of Blues in Dallas, Texas. My buddy Taj Mahal did part of the vocal with me. Not to digress but it was a fun night. Tanya Richardson,my old bass player who is touring with Ruthie Foster...they got nominated for a Grammy that year, played bass.

Any ideas on how one would use BB to add to something like this??

Thanks,

Billy

Depends on what you mean by add? Add a solo? Add chord changes? Add instrument(s)?

You can do all 3 of those within Biab. I would import the wave file into the Audio Chord Wizard first and suss out the changes, then you can add a solo, instrument or chord changes from there. Obviously, if you added chords to it you will lose the original wave file.

What specifically are you wanting to add? Ok, just read you want to add a solo.

Import the wave file and either use ACW for the chords or enter them manually. You will need the key and tempo entered as well.

Once you have the wave file imported, you simply pick a style or add real track instruments/solo's from Biab. You may need to adjust the wave file start time in the audio edit window to sync up with the style.

I just thought about this and Realband would be MUCH easier to add a solo with.

Set up the key and tempo first and then import your audio file. Once the audio file is imported, you will need to add the chord changes and part markers in the chord sheet of Realband.

RB uses the chords in the chord area of RB to "generate" new parts/realtracks/solos with.

You just need to sync up the starting measures etc with your current song in audio format and RB should import to whichever bar/measure you set it too upon import.

Then select the next RB track to start generating your solo/real track parts with.

Then you can save the whole session and export as separate wave files or a single stereo file.

There's a style called Dr John..... have a look at it. It's based on Dr John the night tripper... It's been a while since I played with that style, but this reminded me of it.

Check it out to replicate this kind of song.

Work it up in BB like you want the song..... using the Dr John style..... then save it and open it in Real Band. Add the solo's you need there.

That's a cool groove you got going there..... love the cowbell.

Thanks Trax,

I will give the RB process a try.

Perhaps this song is a little harder to do than some because the bass line is really R&B and the rest is a pretty standard 8 bar blues.

I can re-play all this at any tempo or key so that is not an issue if I need to change it. Well...within reason, as there is a vocal to this.

I did put the key/tempo and chord changes in BB and generate some tracks that I put in Sonar but could not make it work without changing almost everything in Melodyne....less trouble to just write what I would like in Finale and have a vst play it out. Well...most VSTs sound really like...not so good. I was looking for a Real Track solo.

The RB idea looks like it could get me closer.

Thanks for the info.

Cheers,

Billy

BTW, BB has some really good Swingin' Piano Solo's I have been playing guitar over tonight...cool stuff

Thanks Guitarhacker,

I will have a look at that style.

All of this is just a continuation of experimenting with BB to get a handle on what I can used it for.

I was just thinking, if I had BB when I wrote this or other stuff in the past, could I have used it.

I have a clear idea in my head what Dr. John sounds like so it will be cool to see what BB's take will be.

Thanks,

Billy

There are some great "New Orleans" styles using all RealTracks - that include some great piano RealTracks playing by Kevin McKendrie. Make sure to try those out.

Thanks Peter,

I assume all this is on the 2015 audiophile drive I have.

I will continue to look for something that will fit.

There is a style that sort of matches.

60s Soul RealTracks. All instruments play more sparsely at A, then busier at B. The RealDrums play a syncopated kick pattern, alternating between hat & ride at A & B. (El.Bass, Ac.Piano, El.Guitar, El.Guitar, Drums.

The issue is that what I recorded is a R&B bass line. the drum line is syncopated and the piano accents are on the first and second beat in 4/4 time.

I have yet to find a solo in BB that fits the synocopation.

I'll keep looking.

Thanks,

Billy

Was this recorded to a click so the tempo is solid or was it done live so there might be come variation? Just listening to it it sounds pretty even to me.

What kind of soloist are you looking for? I hear a pedal steel happening in there.

I would simply put the track into RB and set the tempo as close as you can to match the track then start generating some soloist RT's keeping in mind you can limit the part to the number of bars you highlight on a track. If you only want 8 bars starting at bar 24 just highlight those 8. That keeps the generation time down too, it just takes a few seconds to generate 8 bars vs much longer to generate a track the length of the whole song.

Say your original recording goes on track 1. Then starting with track 2 on down to 48 if you want, start generating RT solos. A ton of them. You can use different tracks to put them in different parts of the tune. You probably only need 8 bars or so or maybe a few two bar licks plus solos. Even if the tempo wanders a bit it's probably ok for just 8 bars so start experimenting but even if you run into a tempo matching issue a quick trip through RB's audio editor and the pitch/shift utility can easily fix that. If it's for 8-12 bars or so.

when I do this I don't bother giving a lot of thought as to what instruments to use, just grab a bunch of them. It's a computer it's only bits on a hard drive. Do a bunch of them then sit back, listen and start deleting the ones you really can't stand and start chopping, mixing and matching the rest.

Wandering tempo only really rears its head if you're adding a track for the whole song. Then you would need to run it through the ACW to get a tempo map but for a relatively short solo, probably not, you can fix it in the editor.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the heads up Bob. I played all this live to a click track at 100 BPM. It may wander around a small amount but not much. I may play some real stupid stuff at times but it is stupidly in time at least...lol

This whole thing was a test to see if I could have used BB in the past when I wrote some songs. This one does not lend it self to that end.

Some others that were strait eight or shuffles worked much better. All the country stuff I have written I could have used BB, and also most of the jazz. There are some rumba tunes that I have written with drum patterns that BB does not work with.

I know this guy out in Redodo Beach who plays some really cool organ licks; I may twist his arm to play something with me...lol

Thanks again,

Billy

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
