I've been putting off my free upgrade from windows 8.1 to Windows 10 for a long time. Has anyone taken this free upgrade and what kind of issues should I expect to run into? My main concerns are; 1: How much time am I going to spend not only on the download and install but reinstalling programs from my back up drive? 2: Are there any serious non-compatibility issues with music creation software? Hardware? Drivers? That sort of thing. 3: I'm still use Microsoft Office 2003 which has no more support from Microsoft. Is the upgrade going to make Word 2003, Excel 2003 completely unusable? So, has anyone here run into a bad experience upgrading to Windows 10?

I did an in-place upgrade on both my desktop and laptop. Desktop went from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro; laptop went from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro.
Post migration, I did not have to install any applications. For some of them, I had to go back and reset default apps (for launching apps from a data file), and the only real problem program I had was a virtual CD driver I had installed. I found another one that works with Windows 10 and all was good. I've been using it for a couple of months now and am mostly happy.
I did install the Start10 utility from Stardock software (costs $5) to get my original start menu back. Yes, Windows 10 gives you the start menu back, but I had invested a lot of time re-organizing my start menu into folders and sub-folders, which went away with the upgrade. All the apps were there, but not nested the way I wanted them.
I also upgraded my wife's laptop from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro, and she has not complained once, so I know it is working for her.
The biggest issue you may see is possibly some driver issues, but from what I've seen, going from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 should be pretty seamless.
That being said, I can't guarantee that all will be well with your computer, but that was my personal experience.
Make sure you have enough disk space. The Windows 10 files are going to take about 11 GB of space on your C: drive just to stage the installation files, and then you'll need another 4-5 GB for the old version of Windows (which is what allows you to roll back, if you don't like it).

I approached a little different than John. I downloaded Win10 as an ISO so that I could completely wipe my laptop & PC hard drives and start fresh. I just needed my Win8.1 license keys to install Win10 standalone. The laptop had an older version of Office, 2007 and it works fine in Win10. I'm picky about my Start menu as well and reinstalled Classic Shell, www.classicshell.net, which I had been using in Win8.1. I haven't had any issues with software or hardware working in Win10 thus far.

1. It's not bad, really. Most of the install is automated and you can walk away, and I think it was quicker than in the past (non-scientific observation).
2. If you use a Firewire interface, you will have trouble moving from Windows 7 to either 8 or 10. Always check the website support section for drivers before doing any upgrade.
3. Office 2003 ran on my test laptop under the BETA version of Windows 10, so I suspect it will also run under the release version.
4. No, not yet, on three machines. But I can see by your avatar that I don't want to swear to anything and get YOU mad.

YES, one out of three went very bad. Problem was an external WIFI adapter with a driver which did not work when the machine rebooted half way into the install. The machine desktop only had WIFI so the machine froze halfway into the install until I could find a cable connection for internet.

Thanks for the info. When I get a chance I'll back up everything to a flash drive and then upgrade.

I'm waiting until more of the bugs get ironed out.
When I do, I'll make a complete backup disk image so I can restore my entire hard drive to the place it was immediately before upgrading.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
