You don’t get that for free
Swallows flying high
Swallows flying low
Skimming by my window
Just as fast as they can go
Sun is beating down
Like a furnace out there now
They say it’s way too hot
To climb up to the tower
Gypsy woman handed me
A sprig of rosemary
Her smile turned to a snarl
She said you don’t get that for free

You don’t get that for free
No you don’t get that for free
Do you take me for a fool, my son?
You don’t get that for free

Another year is old
Christmas coming soon
Asteroid shaped like a skull
Plays chicken with the moon
The forest is in flames again
Smoke blocks out the sun
Another schoolkid looking down
The barrel of a gun
My diesel isn’t green no more
I guess I was naïve
But I love my creature comforts
I love my big TV

You don’t get that for free
No you don’t get that for free
Do you take me for a fool, my son?
You don’t get that for free

They know what you’ve been buying
They know who you have phoned
They know the things you like to look at
When you are alone

Populations on the move
Borders will be sealed
The secret’s in the envelope
Soon will be revealed
Everything will kill you
If you only give it time
Everything I have is yours
And yours will soon be mine

You don’t get that for free
No you don’t get that for free
Do you take me for a fool, my son?
You don’t get that for free

Hi Peter,

A political song with a contemporary message.
Good choice of RTs and very nice additional guitar playing.
Keep up the good work guys!

Hi Peter,

very thoughtful lyrics.
Like the arrangement and vocal
delivery. Little nit: one guitar seems out of tune.
Enjoyable listen though.

Have to sack the Guitar Tech.
The guitars at the end after the acoustic lead in were pretty much done together one after the other as a guide to go back and do a "proper" solo but I ended up liking them.
If one is out both are - going for the sloppy 70's rock sound!

Nice write, good arrangement.

On my speakers, the vocal seems buried in reverb, which is too bad, because the lyrics are quite good.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I really enjoyed the lyrics, which I read first, wondering what the accompanying melody would be like.

I liked the song, and loved the lyrics, maybe the vocals sat back in the mix a little too much. A little less reverb and a little more lift would maybe give the song a new presence.

Overall, great write and delivery. Very enjoyable.

Hi Peter, enjoyed this one! I like the lyrics and your vocals were good. I like that you included up-to-date things like the skull asteroid which is very recent in the news. Very good write.

Nice hook and melody in that catchy chorus!

You mentioned a '70s rock style, that's definitely what came to mind...The Band or Brewer And Shipley.

Good stuff here guys.

Peter, I like the current topical lyrics. I especially like the verse "Populations on the move
Borders will be sealed
The secret’s in the envelope
Soon will be revealed
Everything will kill you
If you only give it time
Everything I have is yours
And yours will soon be mine" that 's good stuff. I enjoyed my listen. Tom

Peter & Leon,

Good write! Raw and thought-provoking.

Like early Dylan.

And the production fit that perfectly.

I was typing a response the mentioned that this reminded me of early Dylan. But then I scrolled down and found Floyd's response!

I agree with everything that Floyd said!

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Floyd and Mario - you are too kind - assuming you both liked early Dylan!

Thanks David - whilst not too obvious on my speakers I can see an issue in the mix-down chain.

Still singing "you don't get that for free" as I type.
I enjoyed that a lot.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
